Project Freedom, which Trump unveiled to help stranded ships get through Hormuz

Donald Trump has announced a new maritime operation, “Project Freedom,” under which the United States will escort foreign ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in the region continue to disrupt global shipping.

Trump said the initiative is intended to assist vessels from multiple countries that are not directly involved in the conflict but have been unable to move due to security risks. He described these ships and their crews as neutral parties caught in a volatile situation, adding that US forces would guide them safely out of restricted waters so they can resume normal operations.

The operation is expected to begin immediately, with US authorities coordinating efforts to ensure safe passage. Trump framed the move as humanitarian, noting that several ships have been stranded for extended periods and are facing shortages of food and essential supplies needed to sustain large crews onboard.

At the same time, he issued a clear warning that any attempt to interfere with the escort mission would trigger a strong response, signalling that the operation will be conducted under strict security protection. This reflects the high-risk environment in the region, where military tensions and naval activity remain elevated.

The announcement comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran. Trump indicated that discussions with Tehran are continuing and described them as positive, although recent disagreements over a proposed peace framework suggest that major differences remain unresolved.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most critical chokepoints in global trade, handling a significant share of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in this corridor has immediate effects on energy markets, shipping routes, and global supply chains.

“Project Freedom” therefore serves both a humanitarian and strategic function—aiming to relieve immediate pressure on stranded vessels while reinforcing US presence and control over a key maritime route during a period of geopolitical uncertainty.
