Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly strengthened security arrangements surrounding his travel, residences and daily movements amid rising fears within the Kremlin over potential assassination threats linked to the continuing war in Ukraine.
According to multiple international media reports citing leaked European intelligence assessments, Russian security agencies recently imposed expanded protective measures after claims surfaced that Ukraine may have attempted to target Putin near his private residence in the Novgorod region. While the allegations have not been independently verified, the reports have reportedly triggered serious concern inside Russia’s political and military leadership circles.
Both Ukrainian officials and American intelligence agencies have reportedly denied claims that Putin himself was directly targeted. Nevertheless, the reports indicate that Russian authorities have responded by reassessing the security environment around the president and other senior officials as the conflict continues to intensify.
Sources cited in international reports suggest that Putin has significantly reduced visits to some of his key residences, including properties located in Moscow Oblast and Valdai in Novgorod Oblast. The decision is believed to be linked to fears surrounding long-range drone attacks, missile strikes and sabotage operations increasingly associated with the war in Ukraine.
Security concerns inside the Kremlin reportedly deepened further after the killing of Russian Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov in December. According to Russian authorities, Sarvarov died after an explosive device planted beneath his car detonated in what investigators described as a targeted assassination attack.
Analysts believe the combination of the alleged threat near Putin’s residence and the killing of a senior military officer has heightened fears among Russian officials that high-ranking political and military figures could become increasingly vulnerable to covert attacks and sabotage operations.
As part of the expanded security response, Putin’s protective teams have reportedly introduced stricter screening procedures, wider surveillance coverage and enhanced anti-drone systems around presidential compounds and official travel routes. Reports also suggest that the Russian president has quietly reduced public appearances and limited non-essential travel in recent months as part of broader precautionary measures.
Leaked intelligence material referenced by several European media outlets additionally claims that Russia’s Federal Protective Service, commonly known as the FSO, has tightened internal controls over personnel assigned to the presidential security structure.
The reported measures allegedly include stricter monitoring of staff, tighter communication restrictions and expanded background screening for individuals working in close proximity to the Russian president. Authorities are also believed to be increasing efforts to monitor possible insider threats within the broader security establishment.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged that additional precautions were being implemented because of what he described as continuing “terrorist threats” and the growing capability of Ukrainian long-range strike operations.
