Iraganaboyina Chandu, a 26-year-old from Kurnool, reportedly died by suicide after struggling to secure employment following the completion of his master’s degree in Chicago. His death has deeply affected both his family and the wider Indian student community, prompting efforts to support his grieving parents and bring his mortal remains back to India.
Chandu had recently completed his postgraduate studies and had been actively searching for a job for several weeks. According to family members and community sources, he was experiencing significant emotional distress due to prolonged unemployment. The pressure was compounded by concerns about the financial burden his education had placed on his family, particularly his father, who works as a security guard. His inability to find stable employment reportedly intensified his anxiety and sense of responsibility toward his family.
In the aftermath of his death, members of the Indian community in the United States initiated a fundraising campaign to assist his family. The campaign set a target of USD 120,000, with an immediate requirement of approximately USD 25,000 to cover the costs associated with transporting his body from the US to India. These expenses include funeral home services, legal documentation, and international transportation, which are often financially overwhelming for families.
The response to the fundraiser has been significant, with more than USD 76,500 raised within two days. Organisers have shared updates indicating that necessary formalities have been completed and that Chandu’s body is currently at a funeral home. Due to limited flight availability, arrangements are being made to transport his remains at the earliest possible opportunity, with efforts ongoing to expedite the process so that his family can perform the final rites without further delay. Any additional funds raised are expected to help the family manage outstanding educational debts.
The matter has also received attention at the governmental level. A request for assistance was raised with Nara Lokesh, who expressed condolences and urged Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu to facilitate the smooth and timely repatriation of Chandu’s remains. The Civil Aviation Minister responded by stating that coordination efforts were underway with relevant authorities to support the process and ensure that the family receives assistance during this difficult time.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by international students, particularly those dealing with financial obligations, uncertain job markets, and emotional stress while living far from home.
