A tragic incident in Siddharthnagar, Uttar Pradesh, turned a social media stunt into a fatal accident after five children climbed a 60-foot-high water tank to film a video, resulting in one death, serious injuries, and a complex overnight rescue operation.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the children scaled the elevated structure without safety precautions, reportedly attempting to record a reel. While descending, the ladder attached to the tank collapsed under their combined weight, causing three of them to fall from a height of nearly 50 feet. A 13-year-old boy, Siddharth, died instantly due to the impact, while two other children sustained severe injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The remaining two children were left stranded at the top of the tank, unable to descend safely, which triggered an emergency response. Initial rescue attempts faced significant obstacles, as heavy equipment such as cranes could not access the site due to marshy terrain and rainfall, and efforts to create a pathway were unsuccessful.
As conditions worsened and night approached, authorities escalated the response. Following directions from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, assistance was sought from the Indian Air Force. An Mi-17 V5 helicopter from Central Air Command was deployed, converting the operation into a high-risk aerial rescue mission.
After nearly 16 hours of continuous efforts under difficult conditions, both stranded children were successfully airlifted to safety at around 5:20 am. Senior district officials remained on-site throughout the night to supervise the operation and coordinate rescue teams.
The incident has intensified concerns about the dangers associated with risky social media stunts and the lack of safeguards around accessible high-risk structures, highlighting the need for stricter supervision and awareness to prevent similar tragedies.
