A 22-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances in Greater Noida just three months after entering into a love marriage, with her family alleging that she was murdered by her husband and in-laws over property worth crores. The deceased, identified as Monika Nagar, had reportedly married Anuj Chauhan through a court marriage on February 17 after the two were in a relationship.
According to Monika’s family, problems began within weeks of the marriage, with allegations that her husband and his relatives repeatedly pressured her to transfer valuable property in her name. A relative, Anil, alleged that Monika had been “deceived into marriage” for financial gain and was continuously harassed for her assets. The family claimed that the accused frequently assaulted and threatened her over the property dispute.
The family further alleged that Monika called them around 2 pm on Thursday and informed them that her husband and in-laws were physically assaulting her. According to relatives, she said she was being forced to transfer land in their names and feared for her life. After receiving the distress call, Monika’s mother rushed to her daughter’s residence and arrived there several hours later.
Relatives alleged that when Monika’s mother arrived, she saw a crowd gathered outside the house and claimed that Anuj Chauhan was placing Monika’s body inside a vehicle. The family said they followed the car to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. They also alleged that when Monika’s mother tried to intervene, she was assaulted by the accused, who then fled the spot.
The family claimed they immediately informed the police, but later learned that Monika’s body had allegedly been cremated and only the remains were sent for postmortem examination. They accused the police of failing to provide clear information about the condition of the body and alleged that all the accused persons were absconding. The family has demanded strict action and warned of protests if justice is delayed.
Dadri Police said Monika had been living with her mother in a rented accommodation before marrying Anuj Chauhan through a court marriage, adding that both families were aware of the marriage. Police confirmed that the family accused the husband and in-laws of assault and murder following Monika’s death. A case has been registered under relevant sections, and police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused.
