Trump will challenge Xi on China's strategy for the war in Iran

US President Donald Trump is set to travel to China this week for a high-profile visit that is expected to be heavily dominated by discussions surrounding the ongoing Iran conflict and its impact on global stability. Although Chinese authorities have prepared an elaborate diplomatic reception in Beijing, reports suggest that the growing crisis involving Iran will overshadow much of the agenda during Trump’s meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

According to Reuters, Trump is expected to urge Xi Jinping to use Beijing’s influence over Iran in an attempt to help bring an end to the war that has destabilised the Gulf region, disrupted global energy markets, and heightened international security concerns. Washington reportedly sees China as one of the few major powers capable of pressuring Tehran due to its close economic and strategic ties with the Iranian government.

The two-day visit, scheduled for May 14 and 15, marks Trump’s first official trip to China since returning to office. The visit comes at a particularly sensitive time in relations between the world’s two largest economies, with tensions continuing over issues such as tariffs, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, trade restrictions, and access to critical minerals.

Trump had originally planned to visit China earlier this year, but the trip was postponed because of escalating tensions linked to the Iran war. He is now expected to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday, where Chinese officials have arranged a full state itinerary that includes a formal welcome ceremony, bilateral meetings, a state banquet, and a visit to the historic Temple of Heaven.

White House officials described the visit as both strategically important and symbolically significant. Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly stated that the trip would carry “tremendous symbolic significance,” while also emphasising that Trump’s foreign visits are aimed at securing practical outcomes and agreements beneficial to the United States.

Despite the ceremonial aspects of the trip, senior administration officials indicated that Trump plans to directly address China’s relationship with both Iran and Russia during his discussions with Xi Jinping. According to officials quoted by AFP, Trump is expected to apply pressure on China regarding its continued purchases of Iranian oil as well as allegations involving the sale of dual-use goods that Washington believes could potentially support military operations.

One senior US administration official reportedly stated that Trump has repeatedly raised concerns with Xi about the economic support China provides to both Iran and Russia, particularly through energy trade and commercial activity that generates revenue for those governments.

While geopolitical tensions are expected to dominate the discussions, economic cooperation and trade stability will also remain major topics during the visit. Officials from both countries are reportedly exploring the possibility of expanding trade and investment channels in order to reduce friction between the two economies.

US officials suggested that Washington and Beijing may announce new trade and investment forums aimed at improving commercial cooperation and stabilising economic relations. Discussions are also expected to include the future of the trade truce reached last year, which allowed the continued flow of rare earth minerals and other critical materials from China to the United States despite broader tensions between the countries.

However, officials indicated that both governments remain cautious about publicly committing to a long-term extension of the trade arrangement during this particular visit. One official noted that while both sides are interested in maintaining stability, it remains uncertain whether any formal extension will be announced immediately or addressed at a later stage.

China is also reportedly preparing to announce several major purchases involving American products, including Boeing aircraft, agricultural goods, and energy supplies. Analysts view these potential deals as part of broader efforts by Beijing and Washington to ease tensions and maintain economic cooperation despite increasing geopolitical disagreements.

In another sign of continuing diplomatic engagement between the two powers, Xi Jinping and his wife are reportedly expected to make a reciprocal state visit to the United States later this year.
