Trump's ex-friend Ron DeSantis plans to run for US president in 2028

After suffering a heavy defeat to Donald Trump during the 2024 Republican presidential primary race, Ron DeSantis is now quietly rebuilding his national political profile and laying the early groundwork for what many Republicans believe could become a serious 2028 White House bid. According to a report by the New York Post, the Florida governor has intensified outreach efforts to influential Republican donors, conservative activists and party insiders while carefully repositioning himself inside a Republican Party that still revolves heavily around Trump and the MAGA movement.

DeSantis is attempting a delicate political balancing act. On one hand, he wants to re-establish himself as a strong post-Trump conservative capable of leading the party into the future. On the other hand, he must avoid alienating Trump supporters who viewed his 2024 campaign as an act of betrayal against the former president. The challenge for DeSantis is not simply rebuilding his image nationally, but convincing Republican voters that he can remain aligned with Trump-style politics while also offering a fresh direction after years of Trump dominance.

The Florida governor has increasingly returned to the national spotlight through appearances at donor summits, conservative conferences and high-profile policy forums. During one recent interaction, DeSantis openly hinted that his political ambitions extend far beyond his current term as governor. Speaking about his future, he noted that he is still relatively young and suggested that he sees a significant political opportunity ahead.

“I’m in my mid-40s. 2028, you know, maybe beyond that, I think that there’s a lot of runway,” DeSantis said when asked about a possible future presidential campaign.

He also highlighted his governing record in Florida as proof that he remains a compelling Republican figure capable of winning elections and expanding conservative influence. DeSantis pointed to the dramatic voter registration shift in Florida since he first became governor in 2018, arguing that Republicans have transformed the state politically under his leadership.

“Who took a state that had more Democrats than Republicans by 300,000 when he got elected, and now has 1.5 million more Republicans?” he asked while also touting Florida’s economic growth from a trillion-dollar economy to nearly $1.8 trillion during his tenure.

Despite the governor publicly framing his activities as broader political engagement, many Republican insiders believe his preparations for 2028 are already well underway. One GOP source quoted by the New York Post dismissed the idea that DeSantis is merely exploring options, saying, “It’s not been a secret he’s running.”

A major part of DeSantis’s strategy appears to involve repairing his once-broken relationship with Trump himself. The 2024 Republican primary became deeply personal and hostile, with Trump repeatedly mocking DeSantis using insulting nicknames and portraying him as disloyal. However, recent months have seen visible signs of reconciliation between the two men. They have appeared together publicly, and Trump has notably softened his tone toward the Florida governor.

“I think he’s good — doing a good job,” Trump recently said about DeSantis, signalling at least a partial thaw in relations.

DeSantis has also taken steps politically that many Republicans believe are designed to rebuild trust with Trump allies. He has supported legislation and electoral strategies that could strengthen Republican prospects nationally and align more closely with Trump’s political priorities. Within Republican circles, these moves are widely viewed as part of a calculated effort to reconnect with influential figures inside Trump’s orbit before the 2028 race begins to take shape.

However, significant resistance toward DeSantis still exists within sections of the MAGA movement. Many loyal Trump supporters remain sceptical about whether DeSantis can fully recover from the damage caused during the 2024 primary campaign. Some believe the governor miscalculated by directly challenging Trump before the former president’s influence had declined.

One longtime Trump operative reportedly told the Post, “Team Trump is chomping at the bit to destroy DeSantis one more time,” underscoring the lingering hostility among some members of Trump’s political network.

At the same time, other Republican figures are already emerging as potential contenders for the party’s future leadership. JD Vance is increasingly viewed by many insiders as an early favourite for 2028 due to his close ties with Trump and strong standing within the MAGA base. Marco Rubio has also gained attention as another possible contender with broader establishment support.

“It’s JD’s race to lose right now,” a former DeSantis aide reportedly said, while acknowledging that the political landscape could shift dramatically before the next Republican primary officially begins.

For now, DeSantis finds himself navigating one of the most difficult political recoveries in modern Republican politics. He remains ambitious, nationally recognised and politically influential, but his future depends heavily on whether Republican voters ultimately view him as a legitimate successor to Trump or as a rival who challenged the movement too soon.
