UP approves a plan for quick rail link, allowing Delhi to reach Noida airport in 21 minutes

Travel time between Delhi and the upcoming Noida International Airport could eventually be reduced to just 21 minutes under a proposed high-speed rail connectivity project currently being planned by the Uttar Pradesh government, according to state Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta.

The minister made the announcement on Thursday while reviewing projects linked to the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority, commonly known as YEIDA, during a meeting held at PICUP Bhawan.

According to Gupta, the detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System connecting Delhi with Jewar airport has already received approval from the state government and has now been forwarded to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for further consideration.

Officials attending the review meeting informed the minister that the DPR also includes provisions to integrate the proposed Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail corridor directly with the airport terminal through a dedicated railway station.

According to officials, this integration would significantly strengthen regional connectivity and could allow passengers to travel between Delhi and the airport in approximately 21 minutes in the future once the project becomes operational.

The Noida International Airport, commonly referred to as Jewar airport, is expected to become one of India’s largest aviation and logistics hubs after its inauguration. Authorities believe the airport could dramatically transform the broader Yamuna Expressway region into a major centre for cargo movement, industrial activity, manufacturing, and urban development.

During the meeting, Minister Nand Gopal Gupta stated that the entire Yamuna Expressway belt is likely to emerge as an important cargo and logistics corridor because of the airport project and related transport infrastructure developments.

The minister also instructed officials to improve administrative efficiency and adopt a more corporate-style work culture within the authority. He directed them to ensure better maintenance of damaged roads and faster repair work along the expressway network.

According to the official statement issued after the meeting, the Yamuna Expressway is currently being connected with several major expressway projects across the state and country.

These include the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, and Ganga Expressway.

Officials said these links are expected to make the Yamuna Expressway region strategically significant from both transportation and economic perspectives.

Gupta further instructed authorities to speed up the online disbursement of land acquisition compensation to farmers affected by infrastructure and industrial projects. He also directed officials to simplify processes related to no-objection certificates for maps and plots so that citizens do not have to repeatedly visit government offices.

The minister additionally emphasised the need for greater digitisation and technological modernisation within YEIDA operations. He instructed officials to make plot-related information available through live online systems and recommended artificial intelligence training for authority personnel to prepare for future technological requirements.

During the review meeting, officials informed the minister that a master plan for Hathras was currently being prepared as part of wider regional urban expansion plans.

Authorities also stated that the Yamuna Expressway is expected to be extended further toward Agra after passing through Hathras.

In addition, plans are reportedly underway to develop a large urban township spread across nearly 4,700 acres in the Tappal-Bajna region.

Officials further highlighted the rapid industrial growth taking place within the YEIDA region. Several major projects are currently under development, including the proposed HCL-Foxconn semiconductor chip manufacturing unit.

The region is also witnessing the development of electronic manufacturing clusters, an apparel park, a medical device park, a toy manufacturing park, MSME-focused industrial areas, handicraft parks, and large-scale data park projects.

The proposed rapid rail connectivity between Delhi and Jewar airport is therefore being viewed not only as a transportation upgrade but also as a major component of a much larger strategy aimed at transforming the Yamuna Expressway region into a high-speed industrial, logistics, manufacturing, and urban development corridor.
