Video: Due to suspected harassment, an Odisha railway officer was tied up and battered to death

A Government Railway Police (GRP) constable was allegedly lynched by a mob in Odisha’s Khordha district on Wednesday, May 6, in a shocking incident that has sparked widespread outrage and intensified concerns regarding mob violence and policing failures. The killing has also raised serious questions over the response of local authorities and whether timely intervention could have prevented the constable’s death. The brutal incident occurred in broad daylight and has triggered strong reactions after videos related to the assault surfaced online.

The deceased constable was identified as Soumya Ranjan Swain, who had reportedly been serving with the Government Railway Police unit in Cuttack for nearly 12 years. According to police officials, Swain had travelled to the Benupur area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Balianta police station, along with his colleague Om Prakash Rout. Authorities stated that the two policemen were reportedly on their way to meet a senior railway official in connection with official work when the incident unfolded.

Police officials said tensions escalated after some local residents accused the two men of allegedly making inappropriate remarks towards two women in the area. Locals also claimed that the motorcycle on which the two policemen were travelling allegedly hit the women and dragged them for a short distance, which further enraged people gathered nearby. As information about the incident spread across the locality, a large crowd quickly assembled at the spot, creating a highly tense and volatile situation.

According to investigators, the crowd soon turned violent and allegedly intercepted the motorcycle carrying the two policemen. Soumya Ranjan Swain was reportedly dragged and brutally assaulted by members of the mob. He suffered severe injuries during the attack and later died at the scene before he could receive medical treatment. His colleague, Om Prakash Rout, reportedly managed to escape from the spot during the chaos and survived the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the exact sequence of events that led to the violent confrontation.

Following the incident, the victim’s family levelled serious allegations against local police personnel, claiming officers who were allegedly present nearby failed to intervene and stop the assault. The constable’s mother accused the police of remaining passive while her son was being attacked by the mob. She stated that Soumya Ranjan Swain was beaten to death in front of police personnel and alleged that nobody came forward to save him despite the severity of the violence unfolding at the location.

A disturbing video of the assault has since emerged on social media platforms, showing the intensity of the mob attack and drawing widespread condemnation from the public. The footage has intensified demands for strict action against those involved and has reignited debates over rising incidents of mob violence in different parts of the country. Many people also questioned whether faster police action and crowd control measures could have prevented the constable’s death.

Police officials confirmed that a detailed investigation has now been launched into the incident. Jagmohan Meena stated that complaints had been filed by both sides connected to the case. He also said that allegations involving misconduct towards a woman had been raised by the opposing side and that investigators were examining all aspects of the matter carefully before drawing conclusions. According to him, the probe is still underway and officials are currently unable to disclose all details publicly.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing to identify and trace all individuals allegedly involved in the lynching. Police have assured that strict legal action will be taken against those found responsible for the constable’s death. The incident has once again brought attention to the growing threat of mob violence and the urgent need for rapid intervention by law enforcement agencies to prevent situations from spiralling into fatal attacks.
