A 21-year-old woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, died during a bungee jump in Brazil after staff allegedly released her from a bridge without attaching the safety rope, leading to a fatal fall of more than 130 feet.
The incident occurred at Skeleton Bridge during a bungee jumping activity organised by a private company. According to local authorities, Maria was escorted to the edge of the bridge and released, but the essential safety cord that should have secured her during the jump was reportedly not connected.
Videos recorded at the scene captured the moments immediately after the jump. As Maria fell, onlookers reportedly realised something was wrong and could be heard shouting warnings about the missing rope. Authorities said the safety system designed to arrest her fall had not been attached, resulting in her plunging into the ravine below.
Emergency responders rushed to the site but were unable to save her. She was declared dead at the scene, and her body was later transferred to a medical institute for examination.
The tragedy gained further attention because Maria had posted photographs from the jump site shortly before the accident. One image showed the bridge and her jump wristbands, accompanied by a light-hearted caption about being allowed to jump from the bridge. After news of her death emerged, the post spread widely across social media.
Reports indicated that Maria's fiancé was present at the bridge when the incident occurred. He reportedly became distressed after learning of her death and required medical assistance.
Brazilian authorities responded quickly, arresting six people connected to the operation while launching a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal jump. Investigators are examining whether safety procedures were followed, whether negligence occurred, and who may be legally responsible for the incident.
The case has intensified scrutiny of safety standards at adventure tourism and extreme sports sites across Brazil. Authorities are expected to review operational protocols, staff training procedures, equipment inspections and compliance with safety regulations.
Local officials have also called for accountability and a broader review of safety conditions at the site. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine exactly how such a critical safety failure allegedly occurred and whether criminal charges will be filed against those involved.
