A routine late-night drive almost ended in tragedy in Greater Noida after a car fell into a deep roadside pit that residents claim had been left open for several days without barricades, warning signs or reflectors. Although the vehicle suffered major damage, the driver survived the accident.
The incident occurred on Saturday night along the main road in Sector Alpha-1 Railway Vihar, where authorities had excavated a deep pit for repairs to a Ganga water pipeline.
Local residents alleged that the excavation site had remained unsecured for days despite posing a significant danger to motorists. Pramod, who was driving through the area at night, reportedly failed to notice the open pit and his car plunged directly into it.
The collision caused extensive damage to the vehicle. However, the driver escaped without sustaining any serious or life-threatening injuries.
Residents Call Open Excavations ‘Death Traps’
Harendra Bhati, a member of the Active Citizen Team, criticised the Greater Noida Authority over the incident, saying its claims of maintaining pothole-free roads were contradicted by the presence of hazardous, unprotected excavation sites.
“Under the guise of development, dangerous traps are being created across the city,” Bhati said.
Referring to the death of Yuvraj Mehta, he argued that authorities had failed to learn from previous tragedies.
“If proper barricading, reflectors and warning signs had been installed in time, this accident could have been avoided,” he said.
Bhati also accused the Water Department, the Technical Department and the contractor responsible for the work—if one had been appointed—of neglecting their duties. He said routine inspections and effective monitoring could have prevented the incident.
Demand for Investigation and Accountability
Residents and members of the Active Citizen Team have called for a detailed inquiry into the accident and action against those found responsible.
They have demanded accountability from the Water Department, the Technical Department and the contractor involved. In addition, they urged the Greater Noida Authority to immediately secure or fill all open pits across the city and ensure that every excavation site is properly marked with barricades, reflectors and warning signs to prevent similar accidents in the future.
