A 30-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing a fellow commuter inside a Mumbai local train following an argument over shutting the coach door during heavy rainfall has been arrested after an extensive manhunt conducted by the Government Railway Police (GRP).
The accused, identified as Roshan Suvarna, was taken into custody from Kurla after investigators tracked his movements using information gathered during the interrogation of his father, police officials said.
The victim, 22-year-old Mayank Lohar, was allegedly attacked inside the first-class compartment of the Churchgate–Nallasopara Fast Local late on Monday night.
According to investigators, both men boarded the train at Andheri station. As Mumbai experienced heavy rain, a disagreement reportedly broke out between them regarding whether the coach door should remain open or be closed.
What initially started as a verbal exchange soon escalated into a violent confrontation.
Attack Inside the Moving Train
Police said the dispute intensified while the train was travelling between Andheri and Borivali stations.
During the altercation, Roshan allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Mayank in the abdomen, causing severe injuries. The incident unfolded inside the moving train, leaving fellow passengers shocked and frightened.
Investigators believe the attack was triggered by the disagreement over the train door during the rain-soaked journey.
Suspect Escapes After the Incident
Railway officials stated that the accused jumped off the train at Platform No. 6 of Borivali station before the train had fully stopped and managed to flee the scene.
The train arrived at Borivali at approximately 11.04 pm.
Shortly afterward, personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Government Railway Police, and medical teams rushed to the compartment.
By 11.07 pm, emergency responders had reached the coach with a stretcher and support staff. Mayank was removed from the train and taken for urgent medical attention at around 11.12 pm.
Doctors examined him at the Emergency Medical Room at 11.22 pm and declared him dead. His body was later transported by ambulance to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali for post-mortem examination and other legal formalities.
Police Launch Extensive Search Operation
Following the murder, the Borivali GRP initiated a large-scale investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Six separate teams were formed to trace the accused. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage from multiple railway stations and collected additional evidence linked to the case. Senior officials from Western Railway also visited Borivali station to assess the incident and review the response measures.
According to police sources, the breakthrough came after sustained questioning of Roshan’s father, which helped investigators establish the suspect’s whereabouts.
He was subsequently located and arrested in Kurla.
Airport Employee Under Investigation
Police said Roshan Suvarna was employed in the cargo division at Mumbai Airport.
He is currently being interrogated as investigators continue to examine the events that led to the fatal stabbing and gather further details related to the case.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns over passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, where millions of commuters travel every day and minor disputes can sometimes escalate into serious acts of violence.
