A Pakistani national was apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district during a coordinated operation carried out jointly by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, officials said on Saturday. The arrest was made following specific intelligence inputs indicating a possible infiltration attempt across the Line of Control (LoC), prompting security agencies to launch an immediate operation in the area.
The operation, which was conducted under the codename "Operation Simri", was initiated after intelligence agencies received information regarding the suspected movement of an individual who had allegedly crossed into Indian territory under suspicious circumstances. Given the sensitivity of the region and the security implications associated with cross-border infiltration, security forces acted swiftly to prevent any potential threat.
According to officials, troops belonging to the Army's Chinar Corps worked in close coordination with personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police to track the suspected intruder. Acting on the intelligence inputs, the joint team established surveillance and interception measures in the area, leading to the successful apprehension of the individual before he could move further into the region.
In an official statement, the Chinar Corps said that alert troops, working alongside local police personnel, successfully intercepted and detained the Pakistani national near Simri village on June 12. The operation was carried out efficiently, ensuring that the individual was taken into custody without allowing any potential security risk to develop.
Authorities stated that the apprehended individual is currently being questioned by security agencies. Investigators are attempting to determine the exact circumstances under which he crossed into Indian territory and whether the crossing was part of a larger plan involving cross-border networks or other unlawful activities. During the review, the Home Minister reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing both the safety and comfort of the large number of pilgrims expected to undertake the journey this year. He emphasised the importance of maintaining robust security arrangements while ensuring that devotees are able to complete the pilgrimage without disruption.
Shah directed security agencies to establish an impregnable multi-layered security grid along all transit routes associated with the Amarnath Yatra. The security framework is expected to involve close coordination among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, and specialised counter-terrorism units operating in the region.
Officials stated that the security plan will rely on synchronised operations by multiple agencies, with continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations, transit corridors, and pilgrimage routes. The objective is to detect and neutralise any potential threats at the earliest possible stage while maintaining a secure environment for pilgrims.
The review meeting also extended beyond the immediate Amarnath pilgrimage routes. Authorities examined security arrangements at several tourist destinations and peripheral areas across Jammu and Kashmir, recognising that these locations could also require enhanced protection during the pilgrimage season.
The recent apprehension of the Pakistani national in Kupwara is therefore being viewed within the broader context of heightened security vigilance in the Union Territory.
