Australia is prepared to make life more difficult for India, which is under pressure: Molineux, Sophie

Australia captain Sophie Molineux has said her side will aim to capitalise on the pressure already facing India when the two teams meet in a high-profile Women’s T20 World Cup match at Lord’s on Sunday. Australia are nearly through to the semi-finals barring an unlikely scenario, while India need a win to keep their qualification hopes firmly on track.

Molineux, who has not yet beaten India as Australia’s full-time captain since taking over from Alyssa Healy, noted that the contest is likely to be closely fought. Australia previously lost a T20I series 1-2 at home to India earlier this year, and she expects another intense encounter given their recent history and competitive record since 2018.

She said Australia are in a slightly more comfortable position than India in terms of standings and hopes her team can apply early pressure in the match. However, she also emphasised that games between the two sides are typically high-quality and emotionally charged, especially with a packed crowd expected at Lord’s.

Australia have also received a boost with Phoebe Litchfield set to return after recovering from a calf injury. She missed the last three matches after picking up the injury during a quick half-century against South Africa in the opening game.

Litchfield has resumed full training and is expected to be available for selection, strengthening Australia’s batting lineup ahead of the knockout stage.

The six-time world champions have been dominant in the tournament so far, winning all four of their group matches and sitting at the top of Group A with a strong net run rate. After a big win over Pakistan, they will be aiming to finish the group stage with a perfect record.
