Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to enter Jane Austen’s world in the first trailer for a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which introduces the Dashwood sisters, their changing fortunes, and the men who become part of their lives.
Directed by Georgia Oakley, the trailer opens with Marianne, played by Esm Creed-Miles, moving through a grassy landscape, setting a rural tone reminiscent of Pride & Prejudice (2005). It quickly establishes the close relationship between Marianne and Elinor, played by Edgar-Jones, and the family’s financial struggles following their father’s death and the loss of inheritance to a step-brother.
The cast includes Caitriona Balfe as Mrs Dashwood and Bodhi Rae Breathnach as the youngest sister, Margaret. Fiona Shaw appears as Mrs Jennings, who encourages the sisters to find suitable matches.
George MacKay plays Edward Ferrars, who is introduced as Elinor’s romantic interest. In one scene, Elinor quietly admits, “I greatly esteem him,” hinting at her growing feelings.
Frank Dillane appears as Mr Willoughby, who rescues Marianne after an accident, while Herbert Nordrum plays Colonel Brandon, a reserved but emotionally steady figure who is also drawn to Marianne. The trailer hints at tension between Willoughby and Brandon, suggesting conflict over Marianne’s affection.
The adaptation is led by Edgar-Jones, known for her roles in Normal People and Twisters. The original novel, written by Jane Austen, has been adapted multiple times, most notably in Ang Lee’s 1995 Oscar-winning film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.
The new Sense and Sensibility film, produced by Focus Features, Working Title Films, November Pictures and Kiddo Films, is set for theatrical release on October 16.
