Does PM Modi's birthday wish for the minister of education discourage people from leaving

Over the years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often publicly supported his ministers during periods of political controversy, typically through visible gestures rather than silence. In several past instances, such expressions of support have been interpreted as signals of continued confidence in leaders facing criticism.

A similar interpretation is now being drawn from PM Modi’s recent public praise for Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who has been under pressure over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, CUET-UG exam delays, and issues related to CBSE’s evaluation system. The remarks came on Pradhan’s 57th birthday on June 26, at a time when demands for his removal have been intensifying.

Pradhan has faced criticism from opposition parties and protest groups, including a youth-led satirical outfit that has called for his resignation and broader reforms in examination management. Despite the backlash, he has acknowledged responsibility for the issues but has not indicated any intention to step down.

In his birthday message, the Prime Minister praised Pradhan’s role in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), describing his efforts as “commendable” and wishing him good health and longevity. The timing of the message has led political observers to interpret it as an indication of continued backing from the leadership.

This development comes amid speculation about a possible Cabinet reshuffle, as the Modi 3.0 government completes two years in office. While some reports suggest Pradhan could be reassigned or moved to organisational responsibilities ahead of the 2029 general elections, an abrupt exit is also seen as politically sensitive given the ongoing controversy.

The opposition has used the NEET-UG issue to target the government, and Congress leaders have criticised the Prime Minister’s praise for Pradhan while citing concerns raised by affected students and alleged examination irregularities.

In earlier instances as well, PM Modi has publicly supported leaders facing scrutiny. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla faced opposition-backed impeachment proceedings earlier this year but retained his position after the motion was defeated. During that period, Modi’s decision to include Birla in high-profile diplomatic representation was viewed by some as a sign of confidence.

Similarly, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri came under opposition attack over references in the so-called Epstein files, which included reported email exchanges from earlier years. While Puri clarified his interactions, PM Modi posted a public birthday message highlighting his contributions to the energy sector, which was also interpreted as a show of support.

Against this backdrop, the Prime Minister’s latest message for Dharmendra Pradhan is being seen by analysts as part of a consistent pattern of publicly backing ministers during politically sensitive situations, though interpretations of such gestures remain subject to political debate.
