India’s surprising 0-2 T20I series loss to Ireland has sparked criticism of head coach Gautam Gambhir, with the popular social media account Iceland Cricket adding a humorous jab that quickly went viral.
The defeat came during India’s first bilateral T20I series since their triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite arriving in Belfast with a strong and experienced squad, India failed to win either match, suffering one of their most disappointing T20I series results against a team they had traditionally dominated.
Iceland Cricket, known for its witty and often sarcastic cricket-related posts, seized the opportunity to poke fun at the Indian team and its coach.
In a post on X, the account wrote: “We can confirm that we don't wish to add Gautam Gambhir to our coaching staff. He clearly has talent, though. To take those Indian players and deliver those results in Ireland takes truly remarkable gifts.”
The remark quickly gained attention online, with many fans reacting to both the joke and India’s unexpected series defeat.
India’s batting unit struggled throughout the series despite featuring several established players. Under the leadership of new captain Shreyas Iyer, the team failed to dominate proceedings and rarely appeared fully in control.
Sanju Samson, who was instrumental in India’s World Cup victory and earned the Player of the Tournament award, was unable to replicate his earlier form and managed only modest scores in both matches.
The loss has also reignited debate over team selection. Many questioned the decision not to play 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who entered the series with considerable momentum after impressive performances for India A but remained on the sidelines throughout the tour.
Gambhir, who assumed coaching duties following India’s World Cup success, had previously defended the management’s selection strategy and urged patience as the team begins a new cycle of preparation and development.
India’s attention now turns to a much sterner test against England, where they are scheduled to play a white-ball series featuring five T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals. Following the disappointment in Ireland, there is already growing speculation over potential changes to the squad and team combinations ahead of the England tour.
