In ODI rankings, Shubman Gill overtakes Virat Kohli, while Root is the best in Tests

India captain Shubman Gill has moved up three places to reach No. 2 in the ODI batting rankings, according to the latest update released on Wednesday, June 24. Following India’s ODI series win in his first series as captain, Gill has overtaken Virat Kohli, who missed the three-match series due to injury.

Gill now has 791 rating points and is just 24 points behind top-ranked Daryl Mitchell, who continues to hold the No. 1 position.

Gill’s teammate Ishan Kishan also made a significant jump, rising 21 places to reach 43rd after a strong showing in the series.

In the Test rankings, England batter Joe Root has climbed to the top spot, displacing teammate Harry Brook. Root recently crossed 14,000 Test runs, becoming only the second player in history to achieve the milestone after Sachin Tendulkar.

There were also notable movements in the bowling rankings following India’s clean sweep against Afghanistan. Arshdeep Singh rose 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh Krishna moved up 34 spots to 58th, and Washington Sundar climbed 17 positions to 71st.

In Test bowling rankings, New Zealand’s Matt Henry has risen to the No. 1 position after an 11-wicket performance against England. He now shares the top spot with India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah had been the sole No. 1 since November 2024, but Henry’s match-winning spell helped him reach the same rating points, putting both bowlers jointly at the summit.

Henry joins an elite list of New Zealand bowlers to reach No. 1 in Test rankings, alongside Jack Cowie and Richard Hadlee. His current rating of 870 is among the highest ever achieved by a New Zealand bowler in Test cricket.
