OpenAI has unveiled its first branded hardware device, the Codex Micro, a compact input pad designed for its AI coding tool, Codex. The device was showcased at the AI Engineer World Fair in San Francisco and is being developed in partnership with accessory maker Work Louder.
Unlike the AI hardware projects OpenAI is reportedly working on with former Apple designer Jony Ive, the Codex Micro is focused specifically on improving coding workflows. OpenAI describes it as a keyboard accessory built to make using Codex faster and more efficient.
The device appears similar to Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2, which features programmable mechanical keys, a joystick, and a touch sensor for custom shortcuts. The Codex Micro is expected to include dedicated controls for Codex functions, though full details have not yet been revealed.
OpenAI has announced that the Codex Micro will launch on July 15, 2026. Pricing has not been confirmed, but Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 currently sells for $199 (around Rs 18,800) in the US.
