A day that began with celebration and joy ended in tragedy for an Indian-origin family in the United States after a newly married groom was killed in a helicopter crash just hours after his wedding ceremony. The accident claimed the life of 25-year-old Dave Fiji and the helicopter pilot, while Dave's bride, Jessni Fiji, survived with injuries.
The crash occurred on Friday night near Dawsonville in Dawson County. Dave Fiji, an Atlanta-based pilot employed by Delta Air Lines, had just married Jessni earlier that day in a ceremony attended by hundreds of family members and friends. The wedding took place at The Revere, a popular event venue in the region.
According to family members, the wedding had been a joyous occasion and everything had proceeded perfectly throughout the day. Dave's father, George Fiji, later described the ceremony as flawless and said the family could not have asked for a more beautiful celebration. For the Fiji family, who had emigrated from Muvattupuzha in Kerala's Ernakulam district many years ago, it was meant to be one of the happiest days of their lives.
Jessni's family also traces its roots to Kerala, specifically to the Alappuzha district. The marriage brought together two families with deep connections to the Indian state, making the tragedy particularly heartbreaking for relatives in both India and the United States.
After the wedding reception concluded, the newlyweds were scheduled to travel by helicopter to Peachtree-DeKalb Airport before spending their first night as a married couple at a hotel in downtown Atlanta. However, weather conditions had reportedly deteriorated significantly by the end of the evening.
According to George Fiji, fog and rain had reduced visibility around the area as the celebrations came to an end at approximately 9:30 pm. Dave, who was himself an experienced commercial pilot, reportedly expressed concern about flying under such conditions. His father recalled that Dave had indicated he would not personally choose to fly in visibility that poor.
Despite those concerns, the helicopter ultimately departed after the pilot reportedly decided to continue the journey while flying at a higher altitude. The aircraft involved was a Robinson R66, operated by a helicopter charter company.
Sometime later, the helicopter crashed in a remote area southwest of Dawsonville. The crash site was located in rugged terrain characterised by dense forest, steep slopes, and mountainous conditions, making rescue operations extremely difficult.
The accident proved fatal for both Dave Fiji and the helicopter pilot. Jessni survived the impact but suffered injuries and remained trapped beneath wreckage and fallen trees for several hours before rescuers could reach her.
The account of what happened after the crash has deeply moved many people following the case. According to George Fiji, Jessni later described regaining consciousness beneath the wreckage. When she woke up, she reportedly found herself pinned under debris with her husband lying on top of her.
As a nurse by profession, she attempted to assess Dave's condition and called out to him. However, according to her father-in-law's account, she quickly realised that he had already passed away. The emotional impact of that moment has added another heartbreaking dimension to an already devastating tragedy.
Although Jessni suffered numerous cuts, bruises, and other injuries, doctors reportedly determined that she had not sustained any broken bones. Physically, her condition was considered stable, but family members say she remains emotionally devastated by the loss of her husband only hours after their wedding.
Emergency responders faced major challenges reaching the crash site. According to local reports, authorities received information late Friday night regarding a possible helicopter accident. Rescue teams had to navigate difficult terrain, utilise specialised off-road vehicles, and cut through dense vegetation to access the wreckage.
A resident living near the crash site later stated that rescue personnel spent several hours reaching the scene and recovering the survivor. The difficult landscape significantly slowed operations and complicated efforts to provide assistance.
The Federal Aviation Administration later confirmed that the helicopter crashed near Dawsonville at approximately 10:30 pm with three individuals on board. Local authorities subsequently verified that two people had died while one survived.
The helicopter was owned by Prestige Helicopters. Company operations director Andy Whitaker described the accident as unprecedented for the organisation. According to Whitaker, the company had maintained a strong safety record over four decades of operation, and the pilot involved in the crash was familiar with the route being flown.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board has assumed responsibility for leading the inquiry and will examine factors such as weather conditions, aircraft performance, pilot decisions, communications, and operational procedures.
Investigators are expected to review flight records, maintenance documentation, meteorological data, and witness statements as they attempt to determine exactly what happened during the final moments of the flight. A preliminary report is anticipated within approximately 30 days, although a complete investigation could take considerably longer.
For the Fiji family, however, the focus remains on coping with an unimaginable loss. What began as a day filled with celebration, family gatherings, and hopes for the future ended with tragedy only hours later. The story has resonated widely because of its extraordinary circumstances—a young pilot, newly married, losing his life on the very day he exchanged wedding vows.
As family members, friends, and the wider community mourn Dave Fiji's death, attention now turns to the ongoing investigation and to supporting Jessni as she recovers from both her physical injuries and the emotional trauma of surviving a crash that claimed the life of her husband on the first day of their marriage.
