Telegram is gradually becoming accessible again in India after nearly a week of disruption, with the app now back on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Many users are reporting that messaging services are functioning normally again, although the rollout appears uneven across regions and mobile networks.
The restoration follows a temporary government-imposed restriction on Telegram in India, which was in place from June 16 to June 22 during the NEET-UG re-examination period. The action triggered a wider debate over digital regulation, platform accountability and free speech.
Despite the partial restoration, some users—particularly on Jio and Airtel networks—continue to report issues such as inability to sign up, access chats, or use the app without a VPN. Social media posts suggest that while the app works for many, the recovery is still not fully uniform across all users.
The restriction itself was linked to concerns raised by authorities over alleged misuse of Telegram during the NEET exam controversy. Officials argued that the platform made enforcement difficult because blocked channels could be recreated easily and users could operate anonymously using phone numbers and usernames, making it harder to prevent circulation of exam-related material.
Following the order, telecom operators in India blocked access to the app, and app stores temporarily removed Telegram. The company later challenged the directive in the Delhi High Court, but the court upheld the government’s decision, stating that the action was lawful and justified in the context of maintaining exam integrity.
Telegram has maintained that it had already taken steps against unlawful content, stating that it removed hundreds of links related to exam leaks. Its founder, Pavel Durov, also criticised the ban, arguing that such measures primarily affect ordinary users rather than those responsible for spreading restricted material.
With the restrictions now easing, Telegram services are returning in phases, though full stability across networks and regions is still being restored.
