NCERT’s revised Class 9 Social Science textbook, introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, reflects a significant restructuring of the curriculum. The updated book integrates History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics into a single volume and brings notable changes in content and emphasis.
One of the major additions is a dedicated chapter on the 1975–77 Emergency, which presents it as a key episode in India’s democratic history, covering themes such as suspension of civil liberties, press restrictions, political arrests, and the restoration of democracy afterward. The inclusion has received mixed responses, with some viewing it as an important historical topic and others questioning its framing.
At the same time, the textbook removes the Preamble from the introductory section on the Constitution and omits references to the terms “secular” and “secularism” from the main text, while still retaining broader discussions on constitutional values and governance.
The revised edition also introduces a separate chapter on the Election Commission of India and explains electoral processes such as voter registration, electoral rolls, and the conduct of elections, aiming to strengthen students’ understanding of democratic institutions.
NCERT has also cautioned against pirated versions of the textbook, warning that only officially published editions should be used, and stating that action is being taken against unauthorised publishers.
