The controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in donations made at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple has deepened, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the allegations. The development comes amid growing political debate, expanding investigations by law enforcement agencies, and increasing demands from political leaders for a transparent inquiry into the handling of temple donations.
The issue gained prominence after allegations surfaced claiming that funds collected through donation boxes at the Ram temple complex in Ayodhya had gone missing. The claims quickly triggered a political storm, with opposition parties questioning the management of temple funds and seeking accountability from those responsible for overseeing donations and financial transactions.
As the controversy intensified, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust sought an independent investigation, arguing that a thorough inquiry was necessary to establish the truth and address what it described as attempts to spread misinformation and damage the reputation of the temple and the trust.
Responding to the trust's request, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team on Saturday. The SIT includes Lucknow Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, Inspector General of Police Kiran S, and Finance Department Special Secretary Neel Ratan. The committee has been assigned the responsibility of conducting a detailed investigation into the allegations and submitting a comprehensive report to the state government.
Simultaneously, investigative agencies have intensified their efforts on the ground. Sources indicated that several individuals involved in the collection and counting of donations are being scrutinised as part of the inquiry. The Special Operations Group (SOG) is reportedly carrying out an extensive investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, examining financial records, and analysing both technical and physical evidence related to the case.
As part of the ongoing probe, investigators have detained an individual identified as Lav Kush, a resident of Meenapur Phagoli in the Shujaganj area of Rudauli, for questioning. Authorities are reportedly examining whether he has any connection to the alleged irregularities. While officials have remained cautious about releasing details, sources suggest that cash has been recovered during the course of the investigation. However, no official information has been disclosed regarding the amount recovered or its relevance to the allegations.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that additional individuals may have been involved. Despite the growing speculation, neither the police, district administration nor the temple trust has issued an official statement regarding the detention or the reported cash recovery.
The controversy first entered the political spotlight when Akhilesh Yadav alleged that reports indicated crores of rupees from Ram temple donations were missing. He urged the judiciary to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and ensure an impartial investigation. His remarks intensified the debate and prompted reactions from leaders across the political spectrum.
Adding to the controversy, former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh claimed that he was aware of alleged misuse of temple donations, although he declined to publicly disclose specific details. His comments further fuelled demands for greater transparency regarding the trust's finances and management practices.
Senior BJP leader Rajneesh Singh subsequently wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking the public disclosure of information related to the trust's finances, including donation records, expenditure details, bank accounts and land transactions. At the same time, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai demanded an independent inquiry supervised by a sitting High Court judge to ensure complete impartiality.
Responding to the growing allegations, Trust General Secretary Champat Rai stated that internal audits were already underway and maintained that no evidence supporting claims of missing donations had been found thus far. He reiterated that the trust remained committed to transparency and accountability.
Amid the intensifying controversy, former BJP MP Vinay Katiyar expressed strong concern over the allegations. Speaking at a press conference, he said that any corruption, theft or misuse of funds associated with the Ram temple would constitute a betrayal of the faith and devotion of millions of worshippers who had contributed to the temple project over the years.
Katiyar emphasised that the Ram temple represents much more than a place of worship. According to him, it symbolises decades of struggle, sacrifice, dedication and public sentiment. He announced plans to meet senior police officials and submit a memorandum demanding strict legal action against anyone found responsible for wrongdoing.
He also stressed that the investigation must be conducted fairly, transparently and without political influence so that the truth can emerge and public confidence in the institution can be preserved. According to Katiyar, identifying and punishing any guilty individuals is essential not only for legal accountability but also for protecting the sanctity of the temple and maintaining the trust of devotees.
With political leaders, investigating agencies and temple authorities all closely engaged in the matter, attention is now focused on the findings of the SIT and the broader investigation. The inquiry is expected to determine whether any irregularities occurred in the handling of donations, identify those responsible if wrongdoing is established, and provide clarity on a controversy that has generated widespread public and political interest across the country.
