Instead, Central Command confirmed only that an AH-64 Apache helicopter went down near the coast of Oman at approximately 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday while carrying out a patrol mission in regional waters.
In its official statement, Central Command said that both soldiers were rescued safely within roughly two hours of the incident and were reported to be in stable condition. The military added that the cause of the crash remains under investigation and did not provide any indication that enemy fire had been involved.
One of the most notable aspects of the incident was the rescue operation itself. Reports indicate that, for the first time, the US military used an unmanned surface vessel to help recover the crew.
