US President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against Iran on Wednesday, warning that the country would face severe military consequences if it continued delaying a peace agreement with Washington. His comments built on earlier statements in which he accused Tehran of dragging out negotiations and warned that it would have to “pay the price” for failing to reach a deal.
Earlier in the day, Trump took to social media to criticise Iran's approach to the talks, claiming that the Iranian leadership was engaging in rhetoric without taking meaningful steps toward an agreement. He argued that Tehran had missed an opportunity to secure what he described as a favourable deal and suggested that the consequences of further delays would be significant.
Later, speaking to reporters, Trump signalled the possibility of renewed military action. He stated that the United States would continue striking Iranian targets and claimed that American forces had already conducted heavy attacks the previous day. According to reports, he indicated that further operations were likely to follow.
The remarks came amid a fresh escalation between Washington and Tehran. Iranian officials announced that they would reassess diplomatic engagement with the United States following a series of overnight military exchanges between the two countries. Tehran indicated that the latest developments had complicated prospects for continued negotiations and raised questions about the future of diplomatic efforts.
Iran launched drones and missiles targeting American military facilities in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, describing the attacks as retaliation for recent US military operations against Iranian-linked targets near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The strikes marked one of the most serious confrontations between the two countries since a ceasefire framework had been announced earlier in the year.
The latest exchange followed reports that Iran had shot down a US Apache attack helicopter operating near the Strait of Hormuz. In response, American forces carried out strikes against Iranian air defence systems, surveillance radar installations and ground-control facilities. The US military characterised the operation as a proportional response to the helicopter incident.
American officials stated that the two crew members aboard the downed Apache helicopter were successfully rescued through a drone-assisted recovery operation. They also maintained that Iran's retaliatory missile and drone attacks caused no major damage to US military infrastructure and did not result in casualties among American personnel. According to officials, most of the incoming projectiles were intercepted or failed to reach their intended targets.
The renewed hostilities have further heightened tensions across the Middle East and cast additional doubt on the prospects of a broader diplomatic settlement. The escalation comes only days after Iran and Israel reportedly exchanged strikes, raising concerns that multiple fronts of conflict could merge into a wider regional confrontation, making efforts to secure a lasting peace agreement increasingly difficult.
