Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo has suffered a devastating personal tragedy after losing his wife and two children in the recent earthquakes that struck Venezuela. The player spent three days searching through the wreckage in the hope that his family had survived, but rescue teams eventually recovered their bodies.
Trejo, who plays for Venezuelan second-division club Club Sport MarÃtimo La Guaira, was attending a training camp in Caracas when the disaster occurred. After learning about the destruction caused by the earthquakes, the 38-year-old immediately travelled to La Guaira, one of the regions most severely affected by the catastrophe.
According to reports, Trejo’s wife, Yanina, and their children, Aaron and Ainhoa, were inside their seaside residence when the earthquakes struck. Over the following days, Trejo joined rescue efforts, combing through the debris and urging authorities to deploy additional heavy machinery to aid the search operation.
His brother-in-law, Ricardo Ardiles, said the footballer was emotionally shattered by what he encountered at the site, adding that very little of the building remained standing.
Ardiles described the scene as deeply traumatic and heartbreaking.
Friends, teammates, and members of the football community also appealed publicly for assistance and equipment as rescue teams continued their work.
On Sunday, Club Sport MarÃtimo La Guaira confirmed the deaths of Trejo’s wife and children. In a statement, the club expressed its profound sorrow over the tragedy and assured the player that he had the full support of his football family during this difficult time.
The earthquakes have caused widespread devastation across Venezuela. Authorities have reported more than 1,400 fatalities, while thousands of people remain unaccounted for. The disaster has also affected the country’s football fraternity, with youth international Yimvert Berroterán among those confirmed dead, along with several other individuals connected to the sport.
