A 10,000-kilometer rain cloud was seen from South Korea to India, indicating a bumper monsoon


A massive rain band stretching nearly 7,000 to 10,000 kilometres from north India across the Himalayas, China and up to South Korea has been captured in the latest satellite imagery, showcasing one of the most active phases of the 2026 southwest monsoon.

The extensive cloud formation, known as a monsoon convergence zone, developed as moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean interacted with weather systems across Asia, creating an almost uninterrupted corridor of clouds and rainfall spanning thousands of kilometres.

The large-scale weather pattern has resulted in exceptionally heavy rainfall across India.

Rainfall estimates indicate that the country received around 170-180% of its normal daily monsoon rainfall over the past two days, making it the wettest spell of the season so far.

Meteorologists described the event as an exceptionally active monsoon phase, with rainfall far exceeding normal levels across several regions.

Satellite images show dense cloud cover stretching across central, northern and eastern India before extending over the Himalayan region into China and Japan.

Such long cloud bands typically develop when the monsoon trough remains active, allowing atmospheric convergence to draw warm, moisture-rich air into a broad region of rising air currents.

As this moisture-laden air ascends, it cools and condenses, forming towering rain-bearing clouds that trigger widespread showers and thunderstorms across large parts of Asia.

The fresh spell of rainfall comes after weeks of uneven monsoon activity that had left several states facing rainfall deficits.

The latest rains are expected to significantly improve seasonal rainfall totals, particularly across northern and central India.

The active monsoon phase has already brought heavy rainfall to Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and parts of Rajasthan. Meanwhile, eastern and northeastern states continue to experience intense rainfall under the influence of low-pressure systems moving inland from the Bay of Bengal.

However, the vigorous monsoon activity has also heightened concerns over potential hazards. With heavy rain likely to continue over the next few days, authorities have warned of flash floods, waterlogging, landslides and rising river levels, especially in the Himalayan states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

The expansive cloud band also highlights the interconnected nature of weather systems across Asia.

Although the southwest monsoon is generally viewed as an Indian weather phenomenon, the latest satellite imagery illustrates that it forms part of a much broader atmospheric circulation influencing weather patterns from the Arabian Sea to the western Pacific.

With forecasts suggesting that the active monsoon phase will persist through the week, meteorologists believe the current spell could substantially reduce India's seasonal rainfall deficit while replenishing reservoirs and benefiting the ongoing kharif cropping season.
