According to Bank of Baroda, employee email intrusion resulted in the unapproved release of data, although essential banking systems are protected

Bank of Baroda has released its first official statement after a hacker claimed to have leaked nearly 1TB of data allegedly linked to the bank, including customer records and internal documents. The bank said the breach resulted from the compromise of an employee's email account, which led to unauthorised access to certain data. It stressed, however, that its core banking systems were not affected and remain secure.

In a statement issued on Monday, the bank confirmed that an employee's email account had been compromised, resulting in unauthorised access to some data. It added that the incident was detected quickly and immediate measures were taken to contain it.

"The incident involved compromise of an employee's email account, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data. The matter was promptly identified, and immediate containment measures were implemented. The Bank's core banking systems were not accessed and continue to remain secure," the statement said.

Bank of Baroda also said it has launched a detailed forensic investigation into the incident and is cooperating with the relevant authorities in line with regulatory requirements.

"The Bank has initiated a comprehensive forensic investigation to thoroughly examine the matter and is working closely with the relevant authorities in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements," the statement added.

The clarification came hours after a hacker claimed to have leaked around 1TB of data allegedly belonging to Bank of Baroda. According to the claims, the leaked information includes customer records, banking details, internal documents, audit reports and compliance-related records. The bank has neither confirmed those claims nor stated whether any customer data was compromised.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN?

According to the bank's latest statement, the incident originated from the compromise of an employee's email account rather than its core banking infrastructure. However, Bank of Baroda has not disclosed how the email account was breached or specified what data may have been accessed.

The bank said a comprehensive forensic investigation is currently underway, with further details expected once the inquiry is completed.
