Aditya Dhar is approached by the Assam government to create a biopic about Army General Lachit Barphukan

Following the success of the Dhurandhar franchise, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has approached filmmaker Aditya Dhar to helm a biopic on legendary Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. Sarma believes a large-scale Hindi film could introduce the iconic Assamese warrior's legacy to audiences around the world and revealed that discussions with the director are already in progress.

Speaking during a Facebook Live session on Thursday, the Chief Minister confirmed that he had initiated talks with Dhar about the proposed project. Commending the filmmaker's recent work, Sarma said, "Dhurandhar was a major success, and Aditya Dhar is one of the most accomplished directors of his generation," according to PTI.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Sarma said a cinematic retelling of Lachit Borphukan's life could help showcase the legendary general's achievements on a global platform.

"I believe that if our government produces a film on Lachit Borphukan, his remarkable heroism can reach audiences across the world. That would be a significant accomplishment for us," he said.

The Chief Minister added that his initial conversation with Dhar had been encouraging and revealed that the filmmaker is expected to visit Assam in August to continue discussions and explore the creative direction of the project.

However, Sarma made it clear that the government remains committed to making the biopic regardless of who eventually directs it.

"If Aditya Dhar is unable to take up the project, we will approach other filmmakers. Our priority is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made," he said.

The proposed film is part of the Assam government's broader initiative to bring the state's historical icons to the silver screen. In the 2026-27 state Budget, presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

Who was Lachit Borphukan?

Lachit Borphukan is celebrated as one of Assam's greatest military leaders and remains a lasting symbol of courage, patriotism and exceptional leadership. As the commander of the Ahom army, he is best known for leading his forces to victory against the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671, successfully preventing Mughal expansion into Assam.

Despite suffering from serious illness during the campaign, Lachit personally led his troops, inspiring them with his determination and unwavering commitment to defending his homeland. His legacy continues to be honoured annually through Lachit Divas, while his contribution to India's military history is widely recognised.

Aditya Dhar, meanwhile, is enjoying the success of Dhurandhar and its sequel, Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Although fans are eager to learn about his next directorial venture, the filmmaker has so far remained tight-lipped about his future projects.
