After a seven-month stalemate with the censor board, CM Vijay's Jana Nayagan receives an A grade

After nearly seven months marked by uncertainty, legal disputes, piracy leaks and widespread speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's Jana Nayagan has finally received clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with an A certificate. The approval brings an end to one of the longest and most unusual certification delays witnessed in recent Tamil cinema. The film's final runtime has been confirmed at 3 hours and 3 minutes.

Although the censor certificate has been uploaded to the official CBFC website, the detailed list of cuts is yet to be released. According to reports, Jana Nayagan, widely regarded as Vijay's farewell film, is expected to arrive in theatres on July 23 or July 24, though an official announcement is still awaited.

From Pongal release to prolonged certification delay

Jana Nayagan was initially slated for release on January 9, ahead of the Pongal festival and a few months before Vijay's debut electoral contest. The film was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025, but instead of receiving certification within the usual timeframe, it became entangled in an unusually lengthy approval process.

The examining committee initially recommended several modifications. After the producers implemented the suggested changes and resubmitted the film, they were reportedly informed that it qualified for a U/A certificate.

However, the process took an unexpected turn when a member of the examining committee filed an internal objection, claiming that certain scenes could hurt public sentiments. Following the complaint, the certification process came to a halt, and the makers were advised to present the film before the revising committee. Unverified reports also suggested that the film's release ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, scheduled for April 23, could have political implications.

On January 6, production house KVN Productions approached the Madras High Court, seeking directions to expedite the certification process.

As the delay stretched from weeks into months without a final decision, the producers argued before the court that the uncertainty had jeopardised the film's planned release. However, the legal proceedings did not immediately resolve the matter, leaving the project in limbo. After nearly a month and a subsequent visit to the Supreme Court, KVN Productions withdrew its petition and submitted the film to the revising committee.

Piracy leak intensified the controversy

The situation escalated further in April when a high-definition copy of Jana Nayagan surfaced online despite the film not having received CBFC certification.

Tamil Nadu Police later arrested several individuals in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor. During a hearing before the Madras High Court, prosecutors stated that the pirated version had been viewed by nearly 1.2 crore people before authorities were able to block access.

Investigators alleged that the leaked copy had been assembled using footage illicitly copied from an editing facility before being distributed through piracy websites.

Fake certificate fuelled speculation

As the delay continued, speculation surrounding the film intensified across social media.

Only days before the official certification, a forged CBFC certificate claiming that Jana Nayagan had received an A certificate circulated widely online. The X account that shared the document later admitted it was fabricated. It was subsequently discovered that the fake certificate had been created using Vijay's Leo censor certificate as a template, adding to the confusion among fans.

Rumours regarding the release date also gathered momentum after overseas distributors hinted at a July 24 theatrical release. Other reports suggested that the film could instead arrive on July 23, depending on the producers' final plans. Canadian distributor York Cinemas had even announced a July 24 overseas release before KVN Productions issued any official confirmation.

With the certification process now complete, attention has shifted to KVN Productions for the formal announcement of the film's release date.
