Chennai's Amma Canteens have witnessed a significant increase in patronage, with daily footfall rising by 55 per cent following the Tamil Nadu government's decision to modernise and strengthen the subsidised meal programme.
Introduced in 2013 by former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, the Amma Canteen scheme has remained one of Tamil Nadu's most prominent welfare initiatives, offering affordable meals to daily wage workers, urban labourers and economically disadvantaged sections of society. The renewed public response comes after Chief Minister Vijay announced a comprehensive revamp of the canteen network in May.
According to official data, the average daily footfall across Chennai's 383 Amma Canteens has increased from 67,164 in April to more than 1.04 lakh, reflecting a sharp rise in the number of people availing themselves of the subsidised meal service.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government launched the renovation initiative after several reports highlighted concerns regarding food quality, taste and the overall condition of canteen infrastructure.
As part of the exercise, the Chief Minister reviewed the functioning of the canteens and directed the Municipal Administration Department to immediately undertake repair and renovation work wherever necessary. The government observed that several centres required urgent infrastructure upgrades to improve service delivery.
Authorities have been instructed to replace damaged utensils and outdated kitchen equipment, modernise cooking facilities and strengthen maintenance practices across the network. Local bodies have also been asked to assess the immediate requirements of individual canteens and expedite repair work and procurement of essential equipment.
The government has additionally directed officials to enforce strict standards of food quality and hygiene through regular inspections and prompt resolution of public complaints. Maintaining cleanliness in kitchens and dining areas has also been identified as a key priority under the revamped programme.
At present, the Greater Chennai Corporation operates 383 Amma Canteens, while an additional 237 canteens function under various municipal corporations and municipalities across Tamil Nadu. Through the ongoing modernisation drive, the government aims to improve infrastructure and operational standards while ensuring that affordable and nutritious meals continue to reach those who depend on the scheme.
