Argentina and Egypt are prepared for a thrilling World Cup match between Salah and Messi

Two of modern football's biggest stars will headline Tuesday's FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash as defending champions Argentina take on Egypt in Atlanta. While Lionel Messi continues his pursuit of more World Cup history, Mohamed Salah will aim to guide Egypt to an unprecedented quarter-final berth.

The encounter brings together two of the sport's most celebrated players. Argentina are looking to keep their title defence alive, while Egypt are chasing a historic first appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals. Adding another layer of intrigue is the Golden Boot race, with Messi well placed to strengthen his challenge.

Argentina enter the contest after a hard-fought victory over Cape Verde in the Round of 32. Lionel Scaloni's side required extra time before advancing through a Diney Borges own goal after 120 exhausting minutes. Although they progressed, the performance exposed areas of concern ahead of a much tougher test against an Egyptian side that has steadily grown in confidence throughout the tournament.

"We are on alert just as we were before the match against Cape Verde," Scaloni said. "Egypt are a very good team with quality players and a coach who has been working with them for a long time. They play good football and always make life difficult for their opponents."

Argentina also received a major boost with Scaloni confirming that Messi is fully fit despite playing the entire two-hour contest against Cape Verde. The captain remains central to Argentina's hopes, not only because of his influence on the pitch but also due to the race for the tournament's top scorer award.

Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are currently tied on seven goals each. Mbappé leads the Golden Boot standings on the basis of assists, but another prolific display from Messi could see him reclaim the top spot. Messi has also extended his remarkable World Cup scoring record, with 20 career goals placing him ahead of Mbappé on the all-time list.

Standing in Argentina's way is another global football icon. Salah has scored once in four matches during the tournament, a modest return by his standards, but he continues to be the driving force behind Egypt's attack. Despite currently being without a club, the forward remains the player around whom Egypt's hopes are built.

Scaloni acknowledged Salah's quality while expressing confidence in his team's preparation.

"Salah is a great player. It will be a pleasure to face him," Scaloni said. "Our team knows how to play against footballers of this calibre, and we always prepare thoroughly for them."

Although the spotlight naturally falls on Messi and Salah, the contest extends far beyond an individual rivalry. Egypt have emerged as one of the tournament's surprise packages. They reached the knockout stage unbeaten before defeating Australia in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32.

Their disciplined defensive displays have been a hallmark of their campaign, leaving them just one victory away from achieving the best World Cup finish in the nation's history.

Head coach Hossam Hassan insisted his side would not be overawed by either the occasion or their illustrious opponents.

"We have prepared regardless of the colour of the opponent's shirt, their name or their ranking," Hassan said. "This is a World Cup and a great opportunity to prove ourselves and show that we belong at this level."

As the teams take the field in Atlanta, much of the attention will inevitably focus on Messi and Salah. Yet the significance of the match extends beyond the meeting of two footballing greats. For Messi, another standout performance would strengthen both Argentina's title defence and his pursuit of the Golden Boot while adding another chapter to his extraordinary World Cup career. For Salah, it represents an opportunity to lead Egypt to a historic milestone and deliver one of the country's greatest achievements on the global stage.

Argentina are seeking to remain on course for consecutive World Cup titles, while Egypt are aiming to break new ground. Tuesday's Round of 16 encounter promises to be one of the tournament's defining fixtures.
