South Africa international Jayden Adams, who played a key role in his country's historic FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, has died at the age of 25. The South African sports ministry confirmed his death on Saturday, July 11, though no official cause has been announced.
Adams was part of the South African squad that made history by reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time. The midfielder featured in all three group-stage matches for Bafana Bafana, starting against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea that secured the team's place in the Round of 16.
South Africa's memorable run came to an end with a defeat to Canada in the knockout stage, but Adams had established himself as one of the standout performers during the campaign.
The tournament was also marked by personal loss for the midfielder. His grandmother passed away a day before South Africa's group-stage fixture against the Czech Republic, and Adams was substituted at half-time during that match.
At the club level, Adams represented Mamelodi Sundowns, helping the Pretoria-based side win the CAF Champions League during the 2025–26 season. He joined the club in January 2025 after progressing through the youth system at Stellenbosch FC.
The South African Football Players' Union paid tribute to Adams, describing him as one of the country's most promising footballers.
"South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer," the union said in a statement.
South Africa's Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, also expressed his condolences following the midfielder's passing.
"Our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international," McKenzie said.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also paid tribute through an Instagram post, stating that his "thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates."
Adams made his senior debut for South Africa against Mozambique in 2022. Over the course of his international career, he earned 13 caps and scored two goals, playing an important role in the team's successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His death comes only weeks after representing South Africa on football's biggest stage, bringing to an untimely end the career of a midfielder widely regarded as one of the country's brightest emerging talents.
