India captain Shubman Gill has regained the No.1 position in the ICC Men's ODI Batting Rankings despite India's 2-1 ODI series loss to England, marking another milestone in his growing stature as one of the world's leading white-ball batters.
The latest ICC rankings saw Gill return to the top after New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell surrendered the No.1 spot following the Black Caps' recent ODI series against the West Indies. Gill had first claimed the top ranking in November 2023 after a prolific run in ODIs but dropped to second in January this year when Mitchell's impressive performances during New Zealand's tour of India propelled him to the summit.
Six months later, Gill has reclaimed the No.1 ranking.
His rise back to the top was powered by an impressive series against England. Although India lost the three-match contest 2-1, the 26-year-old finished as India's highest run-scorer with 188 runs. He began the series with a fluent 80 in the opening ODI at Edgbaston and followed it up with two more significant contributions, underlining his consistency in the 50-over format.
Sooryavanshi continues rapid rise
India also received encouraging news in the T20I rankings, with teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continuing his remarkable ascent. The 15-year-old climbed 230 places to a career-best 48th in the ICC Men's T20I Batting Rankings after playing a starring role in India's 3-0 series sweep over Zimbabwe.
Sooryavanshi topped the run-scoring charts in the series with 151 runs at an average of 50.33 and earned his first Player of the Series award. His explosive innings, including a 50 off 19 balls and an 81 off 49 deliveries, made him the first player in men's T20I history to register multiple half-centuries before the age of 16.
India's dominance in the T20I batting rankings also continued, with Ishan Kishan retaining the No.1 spot on 910 rating points. Tilak Varma moved up two places to sixth, while Shreyas Iyer climbed seven spots to 24th.
Among the bowlers, Ravi Bishnoi recorded the biggest gain for India, jumping 31 places to 41st after his strong performances against Zimbabwe, capping another successful week for India's white-ball contingent.
