The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's future in ODI cricket, clarifying that the upcoming match against England at Lord's will not be the former India captain's final appearance in the format.
Speaking to PTI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia categorically rejected media reports suggesting that Rohit was set to retire after Sunday's series-deciding ODI.
"There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma's future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday," Saikia said.
No confirmation on 2027 World Cup
The clarification comes amid reports claiming that the national selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are planning a transition towards younger players in preparation for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The 39-year-old opener has faced scrutiny following modest scores in the first two matches of the ongoing ODI series against England.
While dismissing the retirement rumours, Saikia stopped short of confirming Rohit's place in India's long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup.
"Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord's ODI won't be his last match," he added.
India and England will meet in the series-deciding third ODI at Lord's on July 19, with the BCCI making it clear that Rohit remains part of the national team's ODI setup for now.
How the retirement speculation began
The retirement rumours gained momentum after The Indian Express reported that the Indian team management no longer viewed Rohit as part of its plans leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. According to the report, the management intends to give Yashasvi Jaiswal an extended run in the format.
Quoting a BCCI source, the report claimed: "The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma's court."
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta also commented on Rohit's batting during the previous ODI, suggesting the veteran appeared mentally uncertain at the crease.
"I just thought that mentally it just seemed like there was no clarity," Dasgupta said during the live broadcast.
"The hallmark of his batting has always been the clarity of thought. But somehow I just got a feeling that he wanted to shift gears but couldn't. Those nine dot balls put him under a little bit of pressure, and then it's just that clarity wasn't there," he added.
Ashwin criticises team's communication
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin criticised the team management over the manner in which the issue had reportedly been handled.
Ashwin argued that if the selectors had already decided to move on from Rohit, the decision should have been communicated immediately after the 2025 Champions Trophy rather than midway through 2026, when the opener had already begun preparing for the next World Cup cycle.
He also suggested that poor communication from the team management was not an isolated issue, hinting that similar circumstances had influenced his own retirement from international cricket.
Rohit's immediate future
Rohit Sharma is currently enduring a lean run with the bat, and another disappointing performance in the third ODI could increase pressure on the selectors to consider changes, regardless of whether he formally retires from the format.
One of India's most accomplished ODI batters, Rohit has played 287 One-Day Internationals, scoring 11,757 runs at an average of 48.58, including 33 centuries. If he does not feature in ODIs beyond the England series, he would finish his career as the seventh-highest run-scorer in the history of the format.
