BJP MP Dharmendra Pradhan made his first appearance in Parliament after stepping down as Union Education Minister on Monday, using the occasion to deliver a political message by describing himself as a "street fighter" during a brief exchange with Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.
Ahead of his arrival, NDA MPs assembled at the Makar Dwar entrance of Parliament to welcome him. As Pradhan entered the premises, party colleagues greeted him, accompanied him inside and presented him with a ceremonial cap as a gesture of support.
Smiling throughout the reception, Pradhan was praised by BJP leaders, with one MP remarking that it was perhaps the first time a Union minister had resigned without facing any personal allegations.
During the welcome, Jairam Ramesh approached Pradhan and expressed sympathy over his resignation.
"It happens," the Congress leader said. Responding immediately, Pradhan replied, "Nothing happened," before adding, "I am a street fighter. Not an AC room activist."
The brief interaction was interpreted by BJP leaders as a sign that Pradhan remains politically confident despite leaving the Cabinet and is prepared for his next political role.
The exchange has also intensified speculation about his future responsibilities within the BJP.
Besides being one of the party's most prominent leaders in Odisha, Pradhan has frequently been assigned major organisational and election-related responsibilities.
Most recently, he served as the BJP's in-charge for the Bihar Assembly elections before playing a key role in the party's West Bengal campaign, which resulted in its first government in the state in May 2026.
Following the BJP's setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Pradhan was appointed to oversee the Haryana Assembly polls, where the party retained power. He has previously handled election responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Karnataka, contributing to the BJP's victories in those states.
Speculation within the party suggests Pradhan could now be assigned a major organisational role or lead the BJP's campaign in one of the five states heading to Assembly elections. He had earlier served as the party's election in-charge for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
The BJP leadership has consistently backed Pradhan since his resignation, which followed weeks of nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party over the alleged NEET 2026 paper leak and other examination-related irregularities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Pradhan's residence after his resignation, while BJP president Nitin Nabin and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh publicly praised his contributions to the education sector.
Party leaders have maintained that his resignation should be viewed not as a political setback but as an act of accountability, sacrifice and commitment to the national interest.
Meanwhile, the BJP's show of support coincided with an Opposition protest led by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who raised concerns over the alleged use of excessive force against students during the nationwide protests.
The contrasting scenes set the tone for another confrontation between the government and the Opposition as the Lok Sabha prepared to debate the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to strengthen India's anti-paper leak law.
