ENG vs. IND: Ben Duckett spits during the first ODI, and Gurnoor Brar is penalized by the ICC

India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has received an official warning from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during the opening ODI against England in Birmingham.

The offence falls under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to throwing the ball at or near a player in an inappropriate or potentially dangerous manner during an international match.

In addition to the official warning, Brar has been handed one demerit point, marking the first entry on his disciplinary record in the past 24 months.

Incident during England's innings

The incident occurred during the eighth over of England's innings. After fielding the ball, Brar threw it towards the striker in a manner that match officials considered inappropriate and potentially dangerous.

England opener Ben Duckett responded with a smile before hitting the Indian pacer for a six, drawing applause from the Birmingham crowd.

However, Brar had the final say. In the 13th over, he dismissed Duckett for 43, ending the opener's aggressive innings.

Brar accepts sanction

Brar accepted responsibility for the incident and agreed to the sanction imposed by Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

As he admitted the offence, the matter was resolved without the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, with support from third umpire Sam Nogajski and fourth umpire Russell Warren.

Under the ICC's disciplinary regulations, a Level 1 offence carries penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Strong performance despite warning

Despite the disciplinary action, Brar delivered an impressive performance with the ball, claiming two wickets as India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
