Within just a few days, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav used three prominent political platforms in New Delhi to reinforce his party's messaging. The third opportunity emerged unexpectedly outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence, where Akhilesh joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during a sit-in protest, turning the demonstration into another platform aimed at connecting with Uttar Pradesh's youth.
Rather than merely reacting to the ongoing protests, the SP has sought to use them to strengthen its political identity ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Having remained out of power in the state for two consecutive terms, the party is attempting to project itself as the political force standing alongside students, job aspirants and unemployed youth.
Although these events unfolded in New Delhi, the SP's political focus remains firmly on Uttar Pradesh, with Lucknow being its ultimate target.
Amid the Opposition's mobilisation around the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) agitation over alleged examination paper leaks and recruitment irregularities, Akhilesh Yadav has emerged as one of the most visible Opposition leaders after Rahul Gandhi.
The SP's campaign has unfolded across three distinct platforms. The first was Jantar Mantar, where party MP Dimple Yadav repeatedly met protesters, interacted with activist Sonam Wangchuk during his hunger strike and accused the BJP government of failing the country's youth.
The second platform was Parliament, where Akhilesh Yadav linked alleged paper leaks, unemployment and the police action against protesters to what he described as the government's failures.
The third came outside the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, where Akhilesh joined Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders in a sit-in protest before being detained by Delhi Police.
Viewed individually, these incidents resemble routine Opposition politics. Taken together, however, they appear to form a coordinated political messaging strategy.
Jantar Mantar: Building a connection with students
At Jantar Mantar, Dimple Yadav became the SP's most visible face during the protests.
As demonstrations led by the CJP gathered momentum over the alleged NEET paper leak and examination irregularities, the Mainpuri MP visited the protest site several times, meeting Wangchuk and CJP leaders instead of making a single symbolic appearance.
She also marched from Parliament to Jantar Mantar alongside SP MPs while carrying placards questioning the credibility of the examination system.
Following clashes between protesters and police, Dimple Yadav accused the government of suppressing students' voices instead of addressing their concerns. She argued that repeated problems in recruitment and examination processes had left the country's youth facing uncertainty.
Through these appearances, the SP sought to convey that concerns over paper leaks and unemployment were central to its own political agenda rather than merely issues raised by the CJP.
The strategy also reflects the party's attempt to broaden its support base beyond its traditional PDA (Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak) social coalition. The SP appears to believe that issues such as paper leaks and unemployment cut across caste divisions and can resonate with a wider electorate.
These themes have also featured prominently in Akhilesh Yadav's speeches over the past year, with repeated references to examination irregularities, delayed recruitment and unemployment. The party has also shown signs of adopting a softer approach towards Sanatana and soft-Hindutva politics.
Parliament: Taking the issue into the House
While Dimple Yadav's presence at Jantar Mantar generated public attention, Akhilesh Yadav's intervention in Parliament brought the issue into the national political debate.
Representing Kannauj in the Lok Sabha, Akhilesh addressed the House following the police action against protesters.
His speech extended beyond allegations of excessive force and connected three major issues frequently highlighted by the Opposition—paper leaks, unemployment and what it describes as the government's insensitive approach towards young people.
Akhilesh questioned why students protesting for their future were met with force instead of answers. He also criticised the government's handling of examination irregularities, arguing that repeated paper leaks had eroded the confidence of lakhs of candidates preparing for government jobs.
SP MPs, including Dimple Yadav, backed his speech, while other Opposition members staged coordinated protests inside Parliament.
By raising the matter in the Lok Sabha, Akhilesh ensured that the issue became part of the parliamentary record, received extensive attention and compelled the government to respond.
He also argued that the Opposition was forced to march towards the Prime Minister's residence because its concerns were not being heard inside Parliament. He questioned why the Prime Minister had not made a statement in the House on issues affecting the country's youth.
This intervention also helped the SP present itself as consistently pursuing the issue from the streets to Parliament rather than appearing to capitalise on a trending political controversy.
Outside the Prime Minister's residence
The third and most visible platform came outside 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the Prime Minister's official residence.
Akhilesh joined Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc leaders in a sit-in demanding accountability over the police action against protesters and the broader concerns surrounding examination irregularities.
As Delhi Police detained several Opposition leaders attempting to continue the protest, the visuals dominated television broadcasts and social media.
As the leader of the second-largest Opposition party in the Lok Sabha, Akhilesh's detention outside the Prime Minister's residence carried considerable political symbolism.
Television footage showed him being escorted into a police bus while SP workers gathered around it, raising slogans in support of their leader and against the BJP government. Several party workers reportedly ran alongside the bus, turning the detention into a public display of solidarity.
Some reports also suggested that Akhilesh and SP workers later went to Chhatrasal Stadium in north Delhi, where Rahul Gandhi and hundreds of Congress workers had been detained.
By standing alongside Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh also reinforced the SP's position within the INDIA bloc, signalling that it intended to remain one of the BJP's principal opponents rather than following the path of some regional parties that have maintained closer ties with the ruling party.
Why the three-stage strategy matters
Viewed separately, the SP's activities at Jantar Mantar, in Parliament and outside the Prime Minister's residence resemble standard Opposition politics.
Taken together, however, they form a carefully sequenced political campaign.
Each stage served a distinct purpose. Dimple Yadav's repeated visits to Jantar Mantar helped establish an emotional connection with students and job aspirants. Akhilesh Yadav's speech in Parliament institutionalised the party's arguments. The protest outside the Prime Minister's residence created a direct political confrontation that brought national visibility.
Through these three platforms, the SP carried the same message from the streets to Parliament and onto television screens.
Although these events took place in Delhi, the party's political destination remains Uttar Pradesh.
Ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, the SP appears to be positioning itself as the BJP's principal challenger by combining its PDA strategy with issues such as alleged examination irregularities, youth unemployment and delayed recruitment.
Whether this political strategy succeeds remains uncertain, but for now the SP is clearly seeking to establish itself as a party that stands with students and young people.
