US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Wednesday, stating that recent discussions with Iran in Qatar had been productive, despite the United States carrying out major military strikes against Iran only a week earlier.
Addressing reporters, Trump said progress was being made in negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme and indicated that diplomatic efforts were yielding positive results.
"We're getting along very well," Trump said. "The denuclearisation of Iran is progressing well. They've had very constructive meetings, and we'll see what happens."
Diplomatic Efforts Advance
According to a Reuters source, officials from the United States and Iran met in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday to discuss two major issues: maintaining uninterrupted commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and achieving a durable ceasefire.
The discussions form part of broader diplomatic initiatives launched following weeks of heightened military tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Qatar, with support from Pakistan, is serving as a mediator in the negotiations.
Kushner and Witkoff Involved in Preparations
The source said that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and US envoy Steve Witkoff met with Qatar’s prime minister before the talks to help facilitate the diplomatic process and prepare the groundwork for negotiations.
However, neither Kushner nor Witkoff participated directly in the technical-level discussions.
While highlighting the progress of the talks, Trump also referred to the recent US military operation against Iran.
"We hit them very hard last week," he said, while noting that relations between the two sides had improved considerably since then.
"We're getting along very well," Trump reiterated. "They've come a long way."
When asked about Iran’s current situation, the president responded, "I think they're fine."
