Apple is only weeks away from unveiling its next-generation iPhones, but this year the biggest headline may not be a breakthrough feature—it could be the price. If recent leaks and analyst forecasts prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup could become Apple's costliest mainstream smartphones to date. For many buyers, that could make the decision surprisingly straightforward: unless you're comfortable spending significantly more, the iPhone 17 Pro may offer better value.
The iPhone 18 series is also expected to follow a different launch strategy. According to reports, Apple could unveil the premium models—including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone—in September, while the standard iPhone 18 may arrive several months later in the spring.
On the hardware front, the iPhone 18 Pro is tipped to receive a series of refinements rather than a dramatic overhaul. Rumours suggest a smaller Dynamic Island, a redesigned Camera Control button to reduce accidental presses, and a variable-aperture primary camera that could provide greater control over depth-of-field effects.
Apple is also expected to introduce the A20 Pro chipset, reportedly built on a 2nm process, along with a new networking chip. The Pro models are likely to retain 12GB of RAM, while Apple's in-house C2 modem could debut in the lineup, bringing support for satellite connectivity over 5G.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max may see the most meaningful upgrade, with reports pointing to a slightly thicker design to accommodate a larger battery. Paired with a more efficient modem, this could translate into noticeably better battery life. Apple is also expected to introduce new colour options, including a rumoured red finish.
Should you wait for the iPhone 18 Pro?
The bigger question is pricing. Apple has already raised prices across parts of its Mac and iPad portfolio, and analysts expect a similar trend for the iPhone 18 Pro range. While nothing is official yet, several reports suggest US prices could increase by up to $200, with some estimates even predicting a $300 hike.
If those increases are reflected in India, buyers could face a significant jump. The iPhone 17 Pro debuted at Rs 1,34,900, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max launched at Rs 1,49,900. Their successors are expected to be considerably more expensive, pushing Apple's flagship phones further into the ultra-premium category.
That makes the value proposition harder to justify. Although the expected upgrades are meaningful, they may not be enough for many users to warrant spending tens of thousands of rupees more.
For those upgrading from an older iPhone, the iPhone 17 Pro now appears to be the more practical choice. It continues to deliver flagship-level performance, premium cameras and long-term software support while avoiding the likely price increase expected with the iPhone 18 Pro.
Buyers who always want Apple's latest hardware—or who specifically want the improved camera system and potentially longer battery life—may still prefer to wait. But for anyone keeping an eye on their budget, the upcoming launch could make last year's Pro model the smarter buy.
