Pakistan has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be invited to attend the 2027 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Islamabad, stating that all member nations will receive invitations in accordance with the organisation's established protocol.
Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Pakistan's Foreign Office spokesperson said invitations would be extended to the heads of state and government of all SCO member countries, including India.
The spokesperson said issuing invitations is the responsibility of the host nation and would be carried out in line with the SCO's prescribed procedures.
Responding to another question regarding the possibility of a meeting between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan's Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings in Manila, the spokesperson said Islamabad had not received any request from New Delhi for such an engagement.
Pakistan is set to host the 2027 SCO Summit in Islamabad under the organisation's rotational presidency and hosting mechanism. The annual summit is one of the SCO's most significant international gatherings.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation currently comprises 10 member states—China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Belarus. Founded in Beijing on June 15, 2001, the organisation aims to strengthen peace, security, stability and economic cooperation across the Eurasian region.
