The Centre is preparing what could be the most extensive overhaul of the National Testing Agency (NTA) since its inception, with major structural reforms expected over the coming month in the wake of the NEET-UG controversy. Government sources said nearly 47 personnel could be removed as part of the restructuring process.
The NTA is responsible for conducting around 15 to 20 national-level entrance examinations, including NEET UG, JEE Main and CUET, making it one of the country's largest examination authorities.
Major staff reshuffle planned
According to sources, some of the 47 officials identified for removal may also face disciplinary proceedings as the government seeks to strengthen accountability within the agency.
The proposed exercise is aimed at a comprehensive restructuring of the organisation rather than limited personnel changes.
Outsourcing process to be revamped
One of the key areas of reform will be the NTA's outsourcing model for examination-related work.
Sources said the government intends to revamp the agency's process of hiring and outsourcing services to improve oversight, enhance accountability and minimise vulnerabilities during the conduct of examinations.
Focus on a leak-proof examination system
The planned reforms will be based on recommendations made by an expert committee set up to suggest improvements to India's examination framework.
According to sources, the government is looking to introduce a combination of structural and technological changes to build a leak-proof examination system while improving transparency and accountability across the NTA.
The proposed revamp follows months of criticism faced by the agency after the NEET-UG paper leak controversy, which triggered nationwide protests and renewed calls for wide-ranging reforms in India's examination system.
If implemented, the measures would represent the most significant restructuring of the NTA since its establishment, with the government aiming to reinforce the credibility, security and integrity of high-stakes national entrance examinations.
