The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that The Oval in London will host the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final, making it the second time the iconic venue has staged the tournament's title clash.
The final is scheduled to be played from June 9 to 13, 2027, with June 14 set aside as a reserve day if needed. The Oval last hosted the WTC final in 2023, when Australia defeated India by 209 runs to secure their maiden World Test Championship crown.
The confirmation comes after the ICC awarded England the hosting rights for the next three WTC finals—2027, 2029 and 2031. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is tasked with choosing the venue for each edition, and selected The Oval once again following the successful staging of the 2023 final.
Qualification race heats up
With less than a year left before the final, the battle for a place in the championship decider has intensified. While all nine Test-playing nations remain mathematically in contention, the standings have begun to take shape after a busy start to the cycle.
Australia sit at the top of the table with a points percentage of 87.50 after winning seven of their first eight Tests. Defending champions South Africa are second with 75 per cent, while New Zealand remain firmly in contention with a points percentage of 72.22.
Bangladesh have been one of the biggest surprises of the cycle. A 2-0 series sweep over Pakistan in May lifted them to fourth place with a points percentage of 58.33, putting them in a strong position to qualify for their first-ever WTC final.
India remain in contention
Two-time finalists India occupy fifth place with a points percentage of 48.15 after winning four of their nine Tests. Although they have work to do, a strong run over the coming months could quickly improve their position in what remains a closely contested race.
Sri Lanka are sixth with a points percentage of 41.67, while England face a difficult road despite playing many of their remaining matches at home, having slipped to 24.36. West Indies and Pakistan currently occupy the bottom two places and will require a major turnaround to keep their qualification hopes alive.
The standings are likely to change considerably in the coming weeks as several important Test series get underway.
Key series coming up
The next phase of the championship begins with West Indies hosting Pakistan in a two-Test series from July 25. Australia will then aim to strengthen their position at the top when they host Bangladesh in a two-match series starting on August 13.
Attention will also shift to Asia, where India travel to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series beginning on August 15. England, meanwhile, will host Pakistan in a three-Test series across August and September, with crucial World Test Championship points at stake in every match.
Since the World Test Championship was introduced in 2019, each edition has produced a different winner. New Zealand claimed the inaugural title in 2021, Australia lifted the trophy in 2023, and South Africa emerged champions in 2025. The Oval will once again serve as the venue where the next World Test champions will be crowned in 2027.
