India handed fast bowler Ashok Sharma his maiden international cap, while Mayank Yadav returned to the national side after a 21-month absence as captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday.
The series opener marked a significant milestone for Ashok, whose rapid rise over the past year has established him as one of India's most exciting fast-bowling prospects.
Ashok's rapid rise
The Rajasthan pacer burst onto the scene during the 2026 Indian Premier League with a series of impressive performances for Gujarat Titans. Under the guidance of head coach Ashish Nehra, Ashok caught attention with his ability to consistently bowl above 150 kmph while maintaining excellent control.
His standout moment came against Rajasthan Royals, when he bowled the fastest delivery of IPL 2026—a 154.2 kmph thunderbolt that beat Dhruv Jurel at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Those performances earned him his maiden India call-up and, ultimately, his international debut.
Mayank returns
India also welcomed back express pacer Mayank Yadav, who returned to international cricket after nearly two years on the sidelines due to injuries. The Lucknow Super Giants speedster last played for India in October 2024 before recurring fitness issues halted his progress.
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also featured in India's playing XI as the visitors continued to back young talent during the Zimbabwe tour.
Zimbabwe, meanwhile, suffered a setback ahead of the series opener after batter Milton Shumba was ruled out of the three-match T20I series with a right hamstring injury.
The hosts brought in Innocent Kaia as Shumba's replacement, with Sikandar Raza's side aiming to begin the series on a positive note against a youthful Indian team packed with emerging talent.
Concussion substitutes
India also announced their position-specific concussion substitutes for the first T20I against Zimbabwe.
Suryansh Shedge was named as the designated batter/all-rounder, Prabhsimran Singh as the wicketkeeper, Harsh Dubey as the specialist spinner and Yash Thakur as the pace-bowling replacement.
