Vaibhav Sooryavanshi announced his arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion during the first T20I against Zimbabwe on Thursday, July 23. The teenage opener became the youngest batter in history to score a T20 International fifty, surpassing the record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar.
The 15-year-old reached the milestone in just 18 balls, displaying a fearless mix of composure and aggression. His innings included four boundaries and four sixes as he dismantled the Zimbabwe bowling attack and guided India to a comfortable chase of 126 at the Harare Sports Club.
After reaching his half-century, Sooryavanshi celebrated by making an 'A' gesture with his hands before giving a double thumbs-up towards the Indian dugout, leaving fans curious about its meaning.
The youngster has now revealed the significance of the celebrations, explaining that the first gesture was dedicated to his father, while the second was linked to a conversation he had with teammate Rinku Singh.
"I had done it for my mother, and this one was also related to something that Rinku bhaiya and I had spoken about," Sooryavanshi said in a video interview with the BCCI.
He also dedicated his memorable innings to his family, coaches and everyone who had supported him throughout his journey.
"I would like to dedicate this to my family and my coaches, and to everyone who has supported me throughout my journey, who stood by me during both the good and bad phases," he said.
Focused on staying consistent
The half-century came as a timely confidence boost after a difficult start to Sooryavanshi's senior international career. The left-hander had managed just 42 runs across three matches before being left out of the final game as India suffered a 0-4 series defeat.
Returning to Harare, however, proved to be a turning point as the teenager rediscovered his form.
The venue holds special memories for Sooryavanshi, who scored a century in the Under-19 World Cup final to help India lift the title.
While admitting that he enjoys batting at the Harare Sports Club, the youngster said he was not taking his success there for granted.
"You can say I like the vibe here. There are some grounds where you enjoy scoring runs, and maybe this is one of them."
"But I am not taking anything for granted. I am just trying to give my best wherever I play, contribute to the team, and keep performing well," Sooryavanshi said.
India will take on Zimbabwe in the second T20I on Saturday, July 25.
