Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain said a popular Indian restaurant in Glasgow apologised to the Indian boxing contingent and assured them it would correct a map of India displayed at its premises after she pointed out that the country's Northeast region was missing from it.
The incident occurred during a celebratory dinner organised for the Indian boxing team at Mister Singh's India, The Home of Curry, following the contingent's historic performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Indian boxers returned with a record haul of 10 medals, including seven golds and three silvers.
Lovlina, who is from Assam and won a silver medal in Glasgow, noticed that the map of India printed on the restaurant's napkins and displayed outside the establishment did not include the Northeast. She immediately raised the issue with the restaurant's management.
"It was an Indian restaurant where we were having food and a few people pointed out that the napkin and the restaurant's logo had a map of India in which the Northeast was missing and Kashmir was also not shown correctly. I felt really bad about it and raised the issue with the owners. They told me it was a British map, which is why the Northeast was missing, and apologised. They also assured us that they would change the map," Lovlina told India Today.
In a video shared on social media, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist explained why the issue was particularly personal for her.
"Please don't take this the wrong way. I felt a little hurt. The map of India does not include our Northeast. Even the map displayed outside has cut off the Northeast. As someone from the Northeast, that is very upsetting. I just wanted to say this. Please keep it in mind next time. Thank you so much," she said.
Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh, who attended the dinner, clarified that there was no confrontation with the restaurant management and that the matter was resolved amicably.
"There was no confrontation. It was an oversight, and both Lovlina and I pointed it out. They acknowledged the mistake and assured us that it would be corrected," Singh told PTI.
The restaurant is a popular Indian dining destination in Glasgow and has hosted several visiting sports teams and dignitaries over the years.
The Indian boxing contingent enjoyed its most successful Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow, winning a record 10 medals, including seven golds and three silvers. The team visited the restaurant on Saturday to celebrate the achievement before bringing the issue regarding the map to the management's notice.
