Asian Games-bound distance runner Abhishek Pal has found himself at the centre of a doping controversy after receiving a notice from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for an alleged violation. No provisional suspension has been imposed on him so far, but his participation in the upcoming Asian Games remains uncertain.
Pal is part of India’s 72-member athletics squad for the Games in Japan and is due to compete in the 5,000m and 10,000m events. According to a source familiar with the matter, a banned substance was detected in his sample, though only in a very small quantity.
“A banned substance has been found in a very small amount in his dope sample and he has been served a notice by the NADA,” the source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The substance is reportedly believed to be a female fertility drug, adding an unusual dimension to the case. The source said Pal is expected to seek an investigation by NADA.
Given that the Asian Games are approaching, Pal is likely to push for an early resolution. His status with the Indian contingent will depend on the findings of the investigation and any subsequent decision by the anti-doping authorities.
PAL'S ASIAN GAMES PARTICIPATION IN DOUBT
The NADA notice comes after Pal enjoyed a strong domestic season. He won the 10,000m title and finished runner-up in the 5,000m at the National Inter-State Championships in June.
Pal also has international experience, having won bronze in the 10,000m at the 2023 Asian Championships. He has trained in the United States as part of his efforts to compete at the international level.
His recent performances earned him selection in both distance events for the Asian Games. However, the doping notice has now created uncertainty just weeks before the continental competition.
Since NADA has not imposed a provisional suspension, Pal can currently respond to the notice and seek an explanation regarding the substance found in his sample.
DOPING CONCERNS GROW AHEAD OF ASIAN GAMES
Pal's case comes at a time when Indian athletics and sport are already facing increased scrutiny over doping ahead of the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Wrestler Mukul Dahiya has been suspended by NADA, while former Asian Games champion Swapna Barman has also faced a doping case despite announcing her retirement.
The developments have raised concerns about India's anti-doping preparedness ahead of the continental event.
For Pal, the immediate task is to respond to NADA and seek clarity over the finding. His participation in the 5,000m and 10,000m in Japan will ultimately depend on how the proceedings are resolved.
