A 31-year-old software engineer, Vinay Gupta, was allegedly beaten to death at his Delhi home following a domestic dispute with his wife, Rekha. His family has accused his wife and six to seven members of her family of carrying out the attack.
Vinay, who worked as a software engineer at Adobe in Noida and reportedly earned around ₹60 lakh annually, had been married to Rekha, a homemaker, for about three and a half years. The couple had twin children, a boy and a girl.
According to Vinay’s mother, the dispute began over giving medicine to one of their children. Rekha reportedly became upset after Vinay spoke to her in a raised voice and left the house. She allegedly returned around 10 minutes later with several members of her family.
The victim’s family alleged that Rekha arrived with her two brothers, sister-in-law, father, uncle and another person. They claimed the group then assaulted Vinay inside the house.
According to the family, Vinay’s mother had gone to arrange water and refreshments for the visitors when the alleged assault began. Vinay had reportedly also brought water for his in-laws shortly before they attacked him.
The family alleged that Vinay was repeatedly beaten, strangled and struck on the chest with hands and feet. His parents reportedly attempted to intervene, but the assault allegedly continued.
They have also alleged that the attack was pre-planned and that Rekha switched off the CCTV cameras inside the house. CCTV footage reportedly showed Rekha wearing a red suit and her sister-in-law wearing blue, while two of her brothers, her father and another man were allegedly seen in a car outside the residence.
Following the assault, a neighbour reportedly carried Vinay outside because he was unable to stand. He was helped onto a chair before being taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Vinay’s family also claimed that he and his parents occupied a separate portion on the third floor, while Rekha prepared food separately. They alleged that Rekha frequently argued with Vinay’s mother and that one of her brothers had previously threatened Vinay over minor disagreements.
Vinay’s father said the couple had been experiencing disputes over relatively minor issues for some time and that the family had hoped to resolve their differences through discussion. The situation, however, allegedly escalated into violence.
The family has accused Rekha and six to seven others of conspiring to kill Vinay.
Police have arrested four people in connection with the case — Rekha, her two brothers and another accused. A forensic team also visited the house and collected evidence.
A case is being registered under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of Vinay’s death and the alleged involvement of the other accused.
