Arsenal could not have wished for a stronger opening to the new campaign. Mikel Arteta’s team dismantled Manchester City with a convincing 3-0 victory in the Community Shield on Sunday, securing the trophy for the 18th time and immediately signalling their intentions to their Premier League rivals.
The Gunners needed just 23 seconds to break the deadlock, with Riccardo Calafiori completing a brilliant move involving Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Lewis-Skelly allowed the ball to travel across his body around 25 yards from goal before producing an excellent reverse pass into Calafiori’s path. The Italian defender raced onto it and calmly placed a side-footed finish beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The strike became the quickest goal ever scored in the Community Shield and immediately set the tone for an afternoon dominated by Arsenal.
Manchester City had an opportunity to respond when Phil Foden found space around 25 yards out, but David Raya made a superb diving stop to preserve Arsenal’s lead.
Arsenal continued to dictate proceedings and extended their advantage in the 28th minute.
Martin Odegaard, cutting in from the right, delivered a dangerous cross towards the far post. Arsenal debutant Christos Tzolis made a smart run beyond Abdukodir Khusanov and managed to send a looping header back across the face of goal.
Kai Havertz was ideally positioned to finish the move, heading the ball through Donnarumma and into the net.
The second goal reflected Arsenal’s dominance and intensity, despite the Community Shield traditionally being viewed as a season opener rather than a major competitive fixture. Arteta’s players were aggressive from the beginning and gave City little opportunity to establish their rhythm.
Tzolis was particularly impressive during his first appearance for the club. The new signing remained energetic throughout the opening half and played an important role in Arsenal’s second goal.
City made a change at half-time, introducing Jack Grealish for Jeremy Doku, while Arsenal brought on Declan Rice for Bruno Guimaraes.
The adjustments did little to alter the flow of the game.
ARSENAL PUT THE RESULT BEYOND CITY
Arsenal needed just three minutes after the restart to score again and make it 3-0.
Tzolis was once again involved, sending a low delivery into the penalty area. Odegaard controlled it smoothly while moving forward, getting ahead of Josko Gvardiol before wrong-footing the City defender.
With Donnarumma already committed, Odegaard calmly guided the ball into the unguarded net.
The goal perfectly captured Arsenal’s performance, with their quick passing, confidence and composure leaving City struggling to keep up.
Manchester City attempted to alter the contest with a triple substitution soon afterwards, bringing on players including Omar Marmoush and Marc Guehi. Rico Lewis and Rayan Cherki were introduced later, while Arsenal also sent Bukayo Saka and Piero Hincapie onto the pitch.
The changes failed to shift the balance.
Arsenal remained comfortable on the ball and controlled the tempo as the match progressed. City supporters had little to celebrate, while Arsenal fans enjoyed extended spells of possession and responded with chants of “ol” as their team dictated the play.
For Manchester City, it was a disappointing first competitive outing under new manager Enzo Maresca following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
For Arteta, the victory represented another strong statement from an Arsenal side that ended its long wait for the Premier League title last season.
The Community Shield is not necessarily a reliable indicator of how an entire season will unfold. Arsenal themselves are aware of that, particularly given that the previous seven Community Shield winners failed to go on and win the Premier League in the same campaign.
Still, a performance this dominant against Manchester City makes it difficult to ignore Arsenal’s ambitions.
The Premier League season has yet to begin, but Arsenal have already made their intentions clear.
