Suriya and Mamitha Baiju’s Vishwanath and Sons recorded a significant rise in box-office earnings on its second day, collecting Rs 22.25 crore nett in India from 5,157 shows. The film edged past Vijay’s Jana Nayagan by Rs 1.10 crore on Saturday, although it remained behind the Vijay-starrer in overall two-day collections.
After two days, Vishwanath and Sons had earned Rs 37.60 crore nett and Rs 43.47 crore gross in India. It added Rs 19 crore from overseas markets on Saturday, taking its overseas gross to Rs 33 crore and its worldwide gross to Rs 76.47 crore.
The film opened with Rs 15.35 crore nett in India on Day 1 from 5,034 shows, recording an overall occupancy of 42.2%. On Saturday, its collections climbed to Rs 22.25 crore as occupancy improved to 59%. The second-day figure represented a 44.9% increase, with the film earning Rs 6.90 crore more than it did on Friday.
LANGUAGE-WISE PERFORMANCE
The Tamil version collected Rs 13.75 crore nett on Day 2, recording 56% occupancy across 3,226 shows. The Telugu version earned Rs 8.50 crore nett with a stronger occupancy of 64% across 1,931 shows.
Although the Telugu version had the better occupancy rate, the Tamil version generated more revenue because it was screened across a larger number of shows.
Directed by Venky Atluri, the family drama marks Suriya’s latest release following Karuppu and represents a move towards a more family-focused narrative.
COMPARISON WITH JANA NAYAGAN
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan collected Rs 21.15 crore nett in India on its second day, slightly below Vishwanath and Sons, which earned Rs 22.25 crore.
However, Jana Nayagan had established a significant lead on its opening day, collecting Rs 42.70 crore compared with Rs 15.35 crore for Vishwanath and Sons.
After two days, Jana Nayagan had accumulated Rs 63.85 crore nett in India, while its India gross stood at Rs 75 crore. The film also earned Rs 16 crore overseas on Saturday, taking its total overseas gross to Rs 43.50 crore and worldwide gross to Rs 118.50 crore.
On Day 2, the Tamil version of Jana Nayagan remained its biggest contributor, earning Rs 17.95 crore nett. The Hindi version added Rs 1.85 crore, while the Telugu version contributed Rs 1.35 crore.
Tamil recorded 44% occupancy across 6,306 shows, followed by Telugu at 24% across 1,317 shows and Hindi at 11% across 4,567 shows.
Despite Vishwanath and Sons performing better on Day 2, Jana Nayagan maintained its overall advantage after two days. The Vijay-starrer stood at Rs 63.85 crore nett in India compared with Rs 37.60 crore for Vishwanath and Sons.
MORE ABOUT VISHWANATH AND SONS
Vishwanath and Sons received a 3.5-star rating from India Today. The film explores themes including childhood trauma, healing, companionship, marriage and parenting, although the review noted that several of these subjects were handled without much depth.
The film’s 20-year age-gap romance forms a central part of the story but remains largely explored at a surface level.
